Why don't you believe?

Out of curiosity I'd like to know the various reasons why people choose not to believe in a benevolent creator of space and time?

Was there a time that you did, and if so what changed your mind?

    :D

It doesn't add anything for me to put a face or a name on it just because we're humans and are looking for a new parent figure to guide us through our lives. As far as organized religion, there are way too many competing ideologies and none of them seem plausible at all.

What does seem plausible is that humans, feeling a deep desire to understand the unexplained, would invent fictional characters to fill voids that we desperately want filled, whether or not the answers are true. We constantly engage in wishful thinking, and the majority of the time it is very detrimental to the progress of civilization.

I believe in the goodwill of man. If you put your faith in anything, that is the best choice as it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I agree, the shear amount of various religions seems to speak towards it's fraudulence.

I think most people do. I think they just don't believe he is a man in the clouds with a beard and robe.

I use to, I started to question it the older I got until one day I finally decided that I don't believe in God, in fact the more I thought about it, the more and more ridiculous it seemed. But don't tell my mother!

My usual response to that question now is "why should I believe?".

    Religieon bores me.
    It's hypocrisy and it's history.
    The whole deal.
The sooner it all vanishes the more time people dedicate to helping people other than themselves.

If a creator exists, it's been doing fine without my belief for billions of years (unless it created us all last Thursday and just made it look like billions of years of history had happened, in which case it's been doing fine without my belief for good few days), so I think it can manage without me for a few more.

Then again, I've never had the belief. I do wonder why people don't stop believing in god the same time they stop believing in the tooth fairy though.

Sounds like a great twist for a M. Night Shyamalan movie.

I don't believe in God because...I believe I am god(me stating this is becoming rather cliche, I know)
And i don't like religion because it hasn't done anything but give false hope, and distract us from be being better people for the sake of just being better people.

You posted in it, more than once! :D

But yes, you can get super sexy long time with my non-existent girlfriend. Feel free to stick your sperm volcano deep down her blood dispenser.
