Stress is a major contributor to these conditions, and American society is extremely stressful. The major contributor to stress, in turn, is uncertainty. American society encompasses uncertainty in the form of crime, fractured families, heavy competition, economic cycles, and lots of other things. American society is obviously not the only one with these characteristics. But things like this tend to get magnified here. It's also not really fair to zero in on these negative characteristics without also pointing out positive ones, of which American society has many.
