Anon, is a group of people, that is hardly a group at all. it has many MANY facets, in part due to the fact that anon accepts anyone, and anonymity is the only REAL requirement. the quickest way to lurk moar is to read most of the pages on encyclopedia dramatica, it's got tons of information that explains not only how anon is, but a good many of the memes (like, over 9000, is a dragonball Z reference) people protesting scientology join anon mostly because anonymity is a good way to not get made an hero of. (also a meme) edit: I can probably help focus lurk moars, and even answer specific questions, but since the idea of anon is really big and hard to keep hold of, I probably can't give absolute answers, it's one of those things you just start understanding (that you in fact do not understand) after a time.
basically, it's thousands of very socially inept computer geeks of all ages who have way too much time on their hands, who have banded together to be a somewhat anarchist group called "anonymous." they have website forums where they have created their own "language" and "culture" and they troll and are very mean to each other, and often enjoy posting psychotic pictures. radical branches of the anon sometimes organize together to hack other public forums, swarm and spam forums and websites, and generally create havoc, just for the "lulz." also, apparently, many of them hate scientology and are about as crazy as the conspiracy theorists about it.
It's also fer people to make an hero of other idiots anonymously, 'cause they're too wimpy wimpy wimpy to identify themselves in any way, even on teh intertubes.
awww, of course, dave showed up to say it better. dave, feel free to correct me if i've portrayed any of that info incorrectly. i'm still struggling to fully understand the phenom of anon... but i am not at all sure i truly do want to understand.
And the best example is the asshole of the internets. 4chan. If it's absurd, obscene, ridiculous, awesome, etc etc etc, it probably originated on /b/.
not all of them are socially inept actually, some are really well put together people, but, yeah, it's nature does attract a decent % of basement dwellers.
thank you for pointing that out. i wasn't intending to sound like i have a prejudice against computer virtuosity (otherwise known as the geeks and nerds)... i was just using that as a stereotype to help explain it. not cool, but
it's easier to explain it with statistical weights than absolutes, unfortunately, language is epic fail at statistical weight.
'zokay. i was stoned out of my gourd when i signed on here and read all these threads about the anon out to crash hipforums, and goodbye forever threads, and there were horrible pictures of cats being burned to death and people posting tits or gtfo all over the place, and it was just chaos i tell you. dave fortunately explained things to me, calmly and patiently. cause i was a fair bit paranoid too.
