So I'm driving in my car today listening to James Brown's "Funky Drummer" and I says to my self, "self, who's really got that funky shit? Who's the funkiest of the funky?" What do you all think? Who's got the funk?
If you were born after 1970, you're going to be hard-pressed to know "who's got the funk." As a DJ, it never ceases to amaze me how many times I play some of my old funk albums from the '70s and those under 30 think I'm playng rip-offs of rap and hip-hop songs they grew up with that ripped off the tracks from the original '70s funk songs. Prime example: Will Smith's theme to the "Men in Black" movie. Almost no one under 30 realizes that the background beat comes from Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots," which came out in 1978. Can anyone under 30 name the song and the artist who originally recorded the background beat to Tag Team's "Whoomp! There It Is?" Answer: "I'm Ready" by Kano (1979). Was it the 2 Live Crew who got the funk with "Me So Horny" in the early '90s? Nope. It was Roy Ayres' "Firecracker" in 1973. So who're REALLY got the funk? -- Skeeter
"Hit it, and quit it"- by Funkadelic is pretty funky. But my friends and I are writing a song right now called "what da funk were you thinkin'?" and it's pretty funkadocious.
yeah, even though you can stille see its effects on his psyche... specially in his speech, or maybe he just talks that way... i donno
Anyone ever heard of Deep Banana Blackout? They can definitely bring the funk. And last new years I saw Freekbass, which is like a mix between Parliament and Les Claypool. Serious hardcore funk. I danced my little white boy ass off.
