As long as I remember my parents had chickens so I grew up with them. I don't have any myself, but I do like the fact that we always had fresh eggs when growing up. Although every now and then we got some bloody eggs, which grossed me out more than anything.

When I was a kid we had some, for eggs . I know there are forums on cock fighting . Cockfighting is illegal in AZ now , a few people still have them and take them to states where it is llegal .

My next door neighbors had a backyard full of chickens which was against city ordinance. I hated those birds, they were mean and smelled terrible. I didn't mind them until they attacked the baby over there, then I was mad at them, lol. And then my dog and the dog from the house on the other side of them killed them all cuz they kept popping through the fences. It was creepy and hilarious because my dog would bury them upside down with their legs sticking out of the ground...I guess so she could remember where she left them. Yeah...I didn't like those birds.

Two roosters? Anyone who has chickens knows that's generally a bad idea.

Chickens freak me out. In fact, I am scared of anything that has feathers, all sorts of birds.

I saw this thread right after the water one, and was expecting some sort of pseudo-philosophy.

Should chickens be privatized? Are chickens their own owners? Should chickens be their own owners? Should chickens be owned by the people for the greater good of the people? Or owned by people for the greater good of the chickens? Is the greater good of a chicken to serve the greater good of people? Should chickens all be owned by greedy wasteful cruel polluting money grubbing corporations just because milton freedman said so?

My grandma had them when I was a kid. They do smell pretty awful but the eggs are a nice treat. It's not cheap to feed them but they are pretty self maintained inside a fence (that isn't cheap or easy to build). Watch out for predators also.

Wanting to start a coop as well. Looks like a lot of informative links, thanks rat!

the smell ofthe chickens is onesmall part of the ''smell of the farm''....which is wonderful earthy bouquet of aromas depending on the time of day,the wind and the season.....

    ...my farm smells awesome:)

Also all chicken are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. To pluck one out of the constitution.

We had some feather feet chickens when I was a kid. They were cool and they laid tasty eggs too.
