Namaste! I gotta ? 4 u all out there. With the way the world is headed today- Would U rather live in a rural, unsettled area? OR A city or suburb filled with plastic cookie cutter developments and mass population? I would like to know your view regarding this issue. Metropolis? or Nowheresville? Peace& Love
<--- lives in a rural community, about 1 hour from a city of 1.6 million people, and about 10 minutes from the Rocky Mountains (and absolute solitude) ... its the best of both worlds.
I would definetly rather live in a rural area, it's so much more peaceful. I hate cities and would never live in a suburb. I live in a tiny little beach town.
Ooh! Ooh! Big cookie cutter sterile treeless development! Seriously dude, what kind of answer were you expecting? And look at how you phrased the question? Kinda directing the answer. What about living in a nice integrated city, with parks and stuff? We could build garden-cities or something like it, shit, some places are working towards that now. Or do you think it would be better if the cities emptied out into the rural areas and ruined them? Yeah, I'd like a rural, secluded area myself, but some people like cities, and some cities aren't all bad (Detroit is, don't move here).
I live near Fort Collins, Colorado. Its nice because if you want to be in the city, you drive to Denver. If you want that small town feeling, you go downtown Fort Collins. If you want a rural farm setting, head east about 3 miles. If you want seclusion / outdoor recreation head torwards the mountains. If you want smog, pollution, crime, and general unrest, head out of Colorado!
Exactly! This is the way I see it: NYC, as of now, has a population of 8 million in a 469 sq miles. I don't know about you, but I think that is just astounding. The US, in total, has 294,493,428 residents. Imagine how much free space for wildlife and farming if all of us lived in cities like new york. Of course, there's not a big chance for this to happen, I'm just saying that cities are'nt as bad as alot of you think they are.
You haven't ever driven through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Texas, or Oklahoma, have you? There is PLENTY of room for wildlife and agriculture just the way it is right now. Personally you couldn't pay me enough to live in an apartment stacked ontop of countless others surrounded by concrete and winged rats. There's a reason city people are so much more rude than rural folks. Living in a concrete metropolis drains your energy and spirit, much like lab rats in a cage. If you cant be free, whats the point of living?
At this point in my life i would rather live in a big city.....I like cities, and rural areas, whats in between I'm not a big fan of. Cities imply having choices as far as jobs and entertainment go, as well as diverse populations......sometimes areas that are very rural give me the creeps at night....Generally people are more knowledgeable in bigger cities as well.
I prefer city life. I like to have everything within walking or biking distance. I hate suburbs. If a city is designed well it can be very nice. More cities need to accomodate pedestrians and bicyclists though. More green space is good too. Look, living out in the country has it's appeal too, but think about it, you are destrying wildlife habitat for your own selfish privacy and scenery. I was at my boyfriend's aunt's house this weekend, they live in the country. It was a beautiful house in a beautiful area, but I couldn't help but think of how it looked before they built their house and pretty much ruined a wetland and meadow. This is happening all over America, think about the total impact. Also, I agree with what seamonster said, urban folks are smarter and less like rednecks
This is the big dilemna in my life right now. I just moved to the 6th largest city in the US and while I am totally digging not having a car, being able to use public transit, having 4-5 different organic/whole foods markets to choose from, etc, I never realized what a hick I am till I moved here. I love trees and being able to walk out into woods and be surrounded by absolutely nothing and everything at the same time. But since I'm not white and not straight and not in a hetero relationship, I feel like I have to be so careful about where I can travel and eventually live if my partner and I do decide to live rurally when we finally settle down. It really sucks because I know that living in a city does not guarantee safety or open-mindedness, and there are plenty of cool rednecks and hillbillies (I grew up with them) but there are also lots of people out there in every setting that are not looking out for your best interest. As I'm sitting here thinking about it, I guess I would rather be out in the sticks growing my own food with lots of dogs and a couple of shotguns than cooped up in a tiny apartment wondering if mine is going to be the next one broken into in my neighborhood. I guess I really am more of a hick than I realized and i'm cool with that. Now If I could just get through this next year without having a nervous breakdown.
First of all not all people who live rurally are stupid, by making that assumption you are being just as closed-minded as the people that you call rednecks. Secondly more natural habitats are being destoyed to create suburbs ( and malls), for people who want to live near cities, than any other kind of homestead. At least people who live on farms or other rural areas are more likely to be able to do things that are environment-friendly, like composting, subsistance farming, etc than city or suburb dwellers. It's also alot easier for people who don't live in and rely on more natural lands to ignore the devastation that is being done around them. There are alot of rednecks that are environmentalists and conservationists and I dont think that it's fair to sell them short.
Definitly a rural, unsettled area. No doubt. I would love to live on a big farmhouse out in the country, living off the land. Peace.
It's kind of interesting to me that a lot of people would prefer the city-life, when we're on a "hippy forum". I myself hate what we're doing to our land. When I see yet another bunch of tress and plantation knocked down to put up more malls, restaurants, etc., it literally makes me sick to my stomach. I actually feel like I want to cry. There's nothing more beautiful to me than nature. I really wish we could go back to the times where things were more simple. Much peace.
i grew up in a small suburban town, i've spent the last year with Philadelphia 10 minutes away and i can't wait to go to vermont. i'd def. take the rural area. i don't care for the fest pace of a city, though sumtimes you can get carried away with excitement, still i'd take the rural setting, with a big city about an hour away...
