Today in my economics class my teacher was kinda bitchin about how i would have to cut my dreads if i ever wanted to get a serious job and that i don't fit the look for the business world. So it dawned on me, soaringealgle's dreads are longer than he is tall and he's in his 40's, so he must be doing something right. Im curious as to how many people have gotten crap from a place of business for their hair. I know a lot of people like to say, "most business's don't mind if you wear a black tam, or have nice well kept dreads," but i dont know how much validity is really there. I dont have a 'real' job, i just mow grass around my neighborhood cuz its full of old people who would rather pay than do it themselves, so having dreads doesnt affect me at all.
ive worked in an office before mannaging 400 volunteer web designers but i got outta the corporate world long ago i sold computers for awhile i made jewlery for years i try not to have bosses if i can i love working for myself oh but i knoiw the admin of the network of the local community colledge has dreads to his ankles i know a colledge professor with dreads i know acop too i kbew a nurse a docyor freind of mines thinking of starting hers i know more then one lawyer (mostlyu civil rights law) ofcourse herbalists homeopaths i know a hell of alotta dreads many many though do preffer to work outside the system, selling theyre hand msade wares theyre own creative works probly the last thing close to a steady job was selling computers though im not greedy and have very simple needs so i preffer doin volunteer work then workin for a livin oh but if i kept my car the last masny yesars i would be a commercial glider pilot (and maybe instructor) now if i wss forced to have a steady job thats the one id keep
When I was 19 I had long dreads...yes this is my 2nd attempt. I worked at a hospital as a nursing assistant while going through the nursing program at the local JC. I interned at several different hospitals and worked along Dr.'s. I never got crap. I currently work as a behavioral therapist and in fact, today one of my clients said my hair looked cool! I think if you maintain them well you'll be fine with whatever you choose to do.
tell your teacher i make 38,000 to 40,000 a year. i'm a pca (i work alot of hours but you dont have to tell the teacher that part)
tell your teacher i'm a hair farmer and a cosmic nomadic gypsy freak i once found a penny then gave it away
Haha....yeah your teacher sounds real uptight. Dont take it to heart man. be true to yourself and things will fall into place!
tell her by the time ya graduate we'll be livin in a post apocalyptic wasteland anyways and havent ya ever seen the movies? the leader of the army of freaks always sports the dreads
I work at a medical facility and no one cares about my hair. I mean, if they tear into me, they'll have to do the same for a lot of other people, so I think it'd be too much hassle for them.
i work at a trucking company... not an office job but i bet if i wanted to work in the office of the trucking company i could... lol. if you're qualified for the job people wont turn you down for your hair... and if they do then do you really want to work there?
I work in a call centre, I'm the only person with dreads but no one seems to mind. I didn't have them when I got the job but the boss likes them, she said they made me look 'older' (I look pretty young for my age haha) - and they are thinking of promoting me soon which is good. I don't plan to get rid of them for any job, to me a job is just a "means to an end" anyway. It pays the mortgage and bills and stuff, which is the only reason we all have jobs. I have interests outside of work which suit dreads, so I ain't changing them for nobody!
i think you can find lots of "real jobs" that don't give a shit about dreads. sometimes it depends on where you live i think, but still. you can also always play the spiritual card... cause if you don't get a job because of your "religion" or spirituality, it's discriminatory. i've never played it that way though... i just go and be me, and if they don't like me the way i am, i don't really wanna work there anyway. but a lot of people take "real job" to mean high powered business exec, vp of some company or other... and jesus, who wants to do that shit! lol... give you an ulcer and suck your soul, imo. if that's a "real job" i don't ever wanna have a real job!!!
gust think we've all seen those people in construction zones holding the slow signs./. thats gotta be the lowest job there is..and never seen any with dreads so far which means the average dready can get a better job then the average normal person whos only qualified to a sign this also prives though that even if you cant do anything usefill you can alwaysget a job as a human tripid or paperwifhgtor manequine hell u can be a security guard and just get pasid to sit there.. believe it or not, there are pplk out there who work as dog food tasters (none with dreadsthat i know oif) point is your limmitations are all self imposed.. i know a gorgouse dready momma whos job description is..fairy she puts on wingfs and entertains kids n shit u can do any cotporate bullshit jonb u want..but your not limmittedto what the world expects if you..you can think outside the boix and make a livin creatively
Hey soaring, I used to hold signs at construction sites. It was a pretty boring job, but it payed well and no drug tests. I didnt have dreads though
I worked for a long time making tons of money in behind the camera entertainment, I still do that 2 days a week to make ends meet. I live in Los Angeles, so I am not faced with any oppostion from anyone. I stopped doing it full time to go to school to be a gemologist and hopefully be a diamond grader/estate jeweller. You have do what you love! and soaring eagle is right- the only opposition is self imposed. I would have never gotten where I am in a full tattoo body suit and dreads if I let people who stare at me get me down!
I'm glad this is posted. I am in academia and will actually start interviewing for a research position in a few months. I am kind of nervous about how the dreads will go over but I know usually in academia/college ect. I doubt they will care. Besides, I think my resume and recs should speak for themselves regardless of what my hair is doing...I hope!
how much your employer is going to care about your hair will depend on the job, obviously, and the employer's own issues. I'd say unless you're going for a job where you're dealing with professionals or customers face to face, 90% of the time dreads will be no worries. even working with pros and customers, you could probably get the job. it will come down to you, and your ability to sell yourself in a job interview.
