Good question, if my memory is correct Jimmy Page wrote Stairway to Heaven while at the same time dabbling in the occult, that was the rumor back in the day anyway. So it is not to far fetched to think that maybe it was put there on purpose or maybe only coincidence, only they know I suppose.:devil:

Yes, backward masking was what it was called, there were a few but I cant remember offhand other albums that were like this. Alot of them though were just nonsense but a few seemed to be real, cant really imagine how they do it though, recording was pretty primitive compared to today.

 

I think he was more into Aleister Crowley than Satanism. Even to the extent, if I remember right, of owning Crowley's old place up at Loch Ness, in Scotland.

End of the 1980s / early 90s, there was a bit of an occult scare going on among certain types of christians, which culminated in the Satanic Abuse scares, but also had an unhealthy sub-obsession with backward masked "satanic" messages.

There was a vicar in England who was a self-appointed expert, who must have spent half his life listening to records backwards, so not suprisingly he seemed a little warped himself.

One of his biggies, i recall, was Queen's Another One Bites The Dust, which when played backwards alledgedly encouraged the listener to smoke marijuana

I've messed around with trying to record backward masked messages, but even with modern technology its virtually impossible to get something that makes sense both was round. I suspect any "messages" are coincidental...but then, sometimes coincidences can be meaningful.

I thinking backward masking is in rare cases real, but in essence a gimmick to entertain obsessed fans. In most cases so-called backward masking is a coincidence.

I am inspired by the lyrics of Stairway to Heaven. It should only offend those who are indeed trying to buy their way to peace with God. The book of Acts talks about some fools who tried to purchase God's power, but it wasn't for sale.

Others were trying to cast out demons for fun and profit and the demon-possessed man whooped their ass and sent them out into the streets bleeding and naked.

Anaias and his wife Sapphira died shortly after getting caught holding out on the Christian charity program the apostles had set up. They had lied about the profits on a donation.

Television preachers are often trying the same ripoff. Jail and disgrace are waiting for them in this life and an angry God in the next.

 

I couldn't find any satanic meaning in the Rolf Harris version!

 

It says "turn me on dead man" quite a lot, "Paul is dead" about once, and other bits that could imply that he was decapitated in a car crash.

Here's one of my own backwards masking experiments.... the vocals were split and panned hard left and right. You get them the right way round out from the left-hand speaker, and the same but reversed out of the right.

Or record player - on mine it was physically impossible to play something backwards without snapping the stylus arm off.
