I just saw THE DOORS movie, produced by Oliver Stone. When I was done watching it, I just sat for a while and wondered why Jim Morrison is so idolized by the youth these days. Is this a role model for todays young people.? I see so many pictures of him on Hip Forums, like he was some very special and extraordinary person. He was excessive in almost every aspect of his life. He drank constantly, snorted whatever he could get up his nose, took acid and got drunk, even when he needed to perform at an important concert, where people paid mass money to see him and hear his songs. He stumbled around on stage, fell off the stage, passed out, urinated, threw things at the audience, swinging his mike around and hitting people in the head, exposed his penis to the crowd, and incited rioting and chaos. He got a girlfriend pregnant and copped out on his responsibilities. Then he just did too much, too often, and died in his bath tub from excess and heart failure. He seemed like a real jerk to me.! He certainly wouldn't be someone I would want to be around, or have my daughters get together with, and certainly not a role model for the young people of today, who will be the adults of tomorrow. Was he just too sensitive for the cruel world around him? Do you admire the fact that he wasted his life at 27 years old ? What is there to admire? What makes him so appealing ? Why do you like him.?
i dont like Jim Morrison. For a lot of the reasons you stated and also because I think the doors is a shitty band. They're totaly over rated. Everybody in that scene was missing out on touring with The Dead. I sure as hell know that if I was around then I wouldnt have been wasting my time/money watching jim morrison, I woulda been on tour with all the other heads watching the creators of the jam scene do their thing.
I never did like that drunken bafoon who writes the most terrible poetry and lyrics. Most of the good Doors stuff wasn't written by him. But, yet again... he is much better to ideolize than per say... Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. At least there are some humaine values and spirituality hidden behind his alcoholism.
the early jim: i think he is sexy/has a sexy voice. and i love the music becuase it's so random and mellow. the jim of later years: no thanks.
The Jim Morrison in that movie was only part of the real man. In the extras it shows the actual people talking about him, and they said that most of that stuff happened, but it didn't show the sensitive caring guy that he was. Or the laughing and joking funny stoner that he was. It just showed the parts of his life that would shock you, get a rise out of you........scare you? Did he take too many drugs? Yes. But thats what he wanted to do. Thats the direction he thought would take him to his destination. He was infatuated with death and wanted to feel what it was like, but didn't want to take his own life. Does his poetry mean anything? No. He never intended it to do so, he just wanted to open doors of perception to people, and get their minds rolling in a new direction. I don't really like his poetry, it doesn't connect with me. But I love the Doors, their music hits me in ways that few bands can. I don't really have a straight up reason why I like him so much. I don't idolize him and I don't want to be like him. I just love his music, and can relate to what he says. Do I respect him? Fuck I don't know, I never met the guy. To each their own.....I can't really get into the Greatful Dead, but I love the Doors. Not to say that I don't appreciate and respect the Deads music, it just doesn't "hit" me.
Well for starters, it's an Oliver Stone movie so you can expect reality to be a little warped. Have you seen any of his other movies? I personaly don't think they are all that good. Second, I don't think most kids these days really know who he was. Kind of like when you see a kid walking around in a Che Guavara shirt and designer jeans. One is a "symbol" for impoverished workers, the other was "made" by imprverished workers. They are completly clueless who is on their shirt, they just saw it in JC pennies and thought it looked retro.
Is it possible to appreciate the work of an artist / performer without connecting personally, or even disliking the artist ?
"Oliver Stone is a fascist" - Ray Manzarak I love the Doors...I love Jim Morrison. The "Jim" in the movie was sensationalized. Yes, he had problems with excess, but didnt most people in that day in age???? He was a brilliant poet with a crooner's voice. I dont think he wasted his life...shit, he lived more in his 27 years than I have. When he and Pam took off for Paris, he was getting cleaned up, and was concentrating more on his poetry.....dont forget, he became a rock star on accident.....he was a poet, first and foremost. oh yeah, and he was damn fine
He was a rock 'n roll rebel, that's why. I think I understand rather well why he did on stage what he did. I don't idolize him though and I don't really understand anybody who's idolizing another human.
what??? like what? and not liking his poetry is one thing, but dont call it terrible....I mean, I dont really care for William Faulkner, but some would say he's the best...... I think a lot of JIm's poetry is the sound of words together....not necessarily put together for a meaning? Does that make sense?
awake.. shake dreams from your hair my pretty, child my sweet one Choose the day And choose the sign of your day The day's divinity First thing you see A vast radiant beach, a cool, jeweled moon couples, naked, race down by its quite side and we laugh like soft, mad children snug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy -now tell me that's nonsense? I mean, if that doesnt make sense to you, you got to be extremely left-brained... and i feel sorry for you
the tables have turned, my friend....i bashed your music....i guess its time for me to take my own medicine!!!
Id hate to hear what you would say about Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and even the Grateful Dead. Talk about excess everything why not rip them too? These artists did everything in excess thats why they were so great, you dont see art like that anymore from anyone. I mean come on even Crosby Still and Nash were big into the drug scene and did quite a bit in excess.
I Love The Doors saw them in 2004... I think of a band as a family, if Jim was not the lead singet the whole music would not be the same. Summing it up that is why I like him. I agree that Jim partied way to hard and in many ocasions put alcohol and drugs before music which is extremely incorrect, but a lot of great music was made and is still listened to date !!
Makes perfect sense... yet does that make it good? (even though I must admit that "Awake" is one of his best works).
It makes sense that's actually one of my favorite songs . And I also like Jim Morrison and The Doors. I don't know why, but I just do it's a cool band and their music sounds good to me and it's better than the crap they put on the radio. Disagree if you want to but to me they're awesome.
The Doors is the most inaccurate biopic ever made and Stone is an asshole. The main reason is that people who don't know that much about The Doors will think that he was an arrogant alcoholic and an asshole as shown in the movie. Which he was. But there was another side to him, the other side is the reason people loved him and why his friends stayed with him. Read Light my fire by Ray Manzarek, it's the best book about The Doors.
i am totally with dollydagger because the doors are an amazing band and jim morrison was a victim of excess. the early jim, you know, leather-pants wearing, ed sullivan disobeying, sexy brown locks, jim....*drools* sexy sexy man...it's him and robert plant in my duo of sexiness.
