yah so I pods are wicked expensive and mp3 players don't seem to hold enough. I have about 26 gbs (4800 songs) that I want to store on something small I can carry around. A 30 gb i pod looks cool but at over $300 doesn't seem like much of a bargin. anything that compares to the i pod? Are sony viaos any good? where do you go (online) to get good deals on 30 gb music devices??? amazon a good place? just help me out, all the choices on i pods and all these other details sorta confuse me.

I have no idea, I have a 128 mb mp3 player myself, but with the advantage that I can stick these tiny SD memory chips in them,so now I have 128 + 256 mb space.

i use a mp3 player with cd's so in one cd you can store max 170 songs PLUS you can read normal cd. wich is okay to me, 26g of songs just look over rated for me and sound to me that you are huge stealer for artist.

Ummm... there is an alternative to both, and it is somwhere in the middle. I don`t know if it has reached America or if it ever will, but I own a HI-MD player.

It`s a variation of the old Mindisc technology (with digital recording like a tape player)... only the compression rate is much higher so you can fit a lot more onto each disc.

You can record >10 hours of music onto a standard 80 min. Minidisc... but you can also get 1GB discs (700 yen each... about 7 American dollars) that let you store up to 40 hours per disc. That`s usually about 45 or 50 CDs. So really, depending on how many CDs you own, you could probably fit your entire collection on two or three discs.

The quality of the transfer is also much higher than an I-Pod, because you don`t have to convert the file on a computer... it`s a direct transfer. Yes... you can download from a computer using a USB, but you can also record directly from a CD player, or from any external sound source (I have also recorded some of my records onto it)... with no noticeable loss of sound quality .

They`re really light, run on one double A battery, and fit very easily in your pocket (they`re about the size of your wallet).

I got mine for about 27000 yen, which is $270... though that was last year and they were brand new, so I`m sure they`re much cheaper now. Your main problem then would probably be finding the 1GB discs.. or even the standard 80 Min. discs, as MiniDisc technology never quite took off in America.

But maybe you were looking for something cheaper? Anyway, it`s an alternative.

whaaaaat? you are accusing me of stealing music? dude, I have over 250 albums from years of cd buying, DO NOT accuse me of stealing music. not counting the 250 i also have cds my friends burned for me so over 300 counting those. yah, I also d/l music, but thats more rare 60s/70s classic rock and cds of artists that I already have purchased many cds for. like pink floyd, i purchased 16 cds by them so is it a problem to d/l just one live cd and some of their rare tracks? or i puchased 9 bad religion cds..is it a problem to d/l their new album? Instances like that. yes i do d/l (stealing is a harsh term) but I also buy cds and out of all my friends, I am the best about buying cds instead of just d/ling them. i believe in supporting the artist just fine!

thats sounds like a good deal. cos with an i pod, you can never increase the storage..you are stuck with whatever amount of gb you get..with that HI MD thingy, the space is unlimited because of the mini discs, which fit a good amount of cds IMO. I would probably need 10 of those, but thats not bad.

That`s why I need to promote it.

    SO

It takes a long time to fill up a disc. I suppose if you only download and don`t care as much about quality, then an i-pod is great... but I tend to only borrow, rent or buy CDs for direct recording. So it saves a lot of wear and tear on my computer`s hard drive...

Also, I like it because I can plug it into my amp and digitally record my own songs, which I can then download onto my computer and remix later...

I say spring for the ipod. There are others out there that I have used which may have *slightly* better audio quality or longer battery-life, but the thing I like about my ipod is I can have my 9,000-something songs all at once, and find an exact song in about 10 seconds. No other mp3 player has a better interface or controls.

That being said, my ipod crapped out after 2 years and now I also have a mp3-cd player.

ipods have unbelivable aftermarket support as well..

and if u grab the 2 year warantee from Apple [if u get it directly from apple] you are 100% safe

when i had my ipod i dropped it hard one day and it glitched and wouldnt turn on, i phoned up apple, and THAT DAY, an insurance broker for some company accociated with Apple came to my house, took a look at my ipod and gave me a brand new one, the SAME DAY i phoned apple, needless to say i was very impressed.

well i was thinking of getting a 30 or 40 gb i pod off ebay or amazon. but than again you probably don't get the warranty. i just want to save money but if i pods are a little fragile as some have stated, it looks like i will have to fork over the extra dough and get it straight from apple to be assured of the warranty.
