To the old hippies out there...

What song or song did you feel best summed up who you felt you were , or the movement you were involved in back in the day? What was your personal anthem? Is there a particular musical act or artist you felt very connected to , or was it more wide ranging?

There could be many. For one that puts the feel in me: The Led - Going to Califorinia. I was also very much into QMS. I don't think I could pick one song to represent the time. It wasn't a singularity. The Band represented a different aspect of the time than Hendrix but both represented the time along with many bands and songs from many others. So many.

Hmmm... Dylan really got me on track, I think:
So much Dylan stuff, but I think one of the best is - The Times They Are A Changin'.

    Later motivators were:

    Scott Mackenzie - San Francisco.

Most of the Moody Blues album - In Search Of The Lost Chord.

For me, the first song I identified with was Come Saturday Morning by Dory Previn 1969. It was when I still had a str8 job in New Orleans in early 1970 but was hanging with some heads I had met uptown and we would trip on acid on weekends at Audubon Park.

    Come Saturday Morning
I'm going away with my friend
We'll Saturday laugh more than half of the day.
    Just I and my friend.
We'll travel for miles in our Saturday smiles
(dressed up in our rings and our Saturday things)
    and then we'll move on
But we'll remember long after Saturday's gone.

    Then back to work.

Of course the theme song for the era was The Times They Are A Changing

Later I became more into the Moody Blues as I got into a more spiritual mindset, you know, speeding thru the universe, thinking is the best way to travel.

But there were so many songs of the time that sang to one part of me and connected. That is the nature of music.

For me, it was Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence".

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence

    So true.
Sometimes it can be the generally accepted soundtrack for an entire generation, other times it can be intensely personal.

    HAHAHA Rollingalong. Yeah.

Early Dylan showed me that the burbs were not the only reality

Like a Rolling Stone flat out got me off

In Vietnam it was Rolling Stones Live: Paint it Black, Have You Seen Your Mother Baby. And Turn! Turn! Turn!

    Pre-psychedelic mind - The End

Psychedelic mind: Brokedown Palace, Ripple, etc. Incredible String Band, like This Moment, Talking of the End, Job's Tears, etc.

wow jefferson airplane, that takes me way back to a time that is forever gone,i dont see or hear much about Grace and the music. I do remember seeing her on CNN at 1 time. seems like the local pigs were giving her a bunch of shit probably not worth getting mad over, but any way at one point she walked back into her house and came right back out with a 12 guage shotgun and plenty of ammo to spare. well i really dont advocate violence as a vehicle to change things but well sometimes its all that you have and the bells are ringing for thee.
