What music did you listen to in High School and College? Which bands did you get to see live during those times?
Wow Live Bands. Hmmmmm...Hendrix (3 Times), Flying Burrito Brothers, Jefferson Airplane, Procol Harum, (Palm Springs Pop Festival, one of the few times they did a live show), Santana, CSN&Y (it was the concert in the picture on the 4 Way Street Album), Chicago, Canned Heat, Led Zep (3 times), Neil Young (5 times), Linda Ronstadt (twice), The Drifters, The Coasters, Grand Funk, Blind Faith, The Small Faces, Bonnie Delaney and Friends, Rolling Stones, Ike And Tina Turner, John Lee Hooker, Hot Tuna, David Bowie, Dave Mason, Free, Leslie West and Mountain, Blue Cheer, Elton John, H.P. Lovecraft, Lee Michaels and Frosty, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Moody Blues, Derek And The Dominos, Jethro Tull, Jackson Brown, Maria Muldaur, Bonnie Raitt, and a lot more. I know I saw live bands in 1967, but I can't remember anything that happened that year, except for a lot of acid and shrooms. <g>
LOL-Man I think you and I were at the same shows!-Mostly Bill Grahmn or Chet Helms-Are you a Avalon vet?_HP Lovecraft was great as was Procal Harum-very spacey stuff on llysergic-Have you shecked out THE VAULT?-Its all live recordings from the Fillmore and Winterland-Bill Gramhm had em in his basement unknown till he died-They are playing them in rotation and I am installing a program to burn streaming audio today -As I was and you as well; were there when they played-I need to get it on disk-Led Zepplin 67 from Winterland with Big Brother and Janis-3 bucks!-wow-we sere super lucky I believe-John MAYALL AT THE cAROUSEL with Mark/Almond group-on and on-To the origonal poster-just go to THE Vault Radio-it's all there to relive-
No I was strictly into the L.A./Hollywood scene. Forum, Shrine Auditorium, etc. The only times I went to the city was when I was making a run to buy a gallon of liquid L. Quick turn around. No time to enjoy the culture. Really good program for catching stream http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Download LAME too if you want to save to mp3. All freeware.
DOlly-Knock it off!-Your generation does not suck-it blows!haha- just kiddin man-I love being around today and I do meet alot of younger people who are not only very tuned into whats going on around them but are ready to make it a better world-Say ya like Marley?-then "don't give up the fight"-ps-I was in Montego Bay this year-I went out on a snorkeling sail boat-The young crew were listening to some new type of Raggee with a hip hop beat-strange but-thats cool-Us old timers were askin for Bob-but they kept playin their stuff-so-word out to tour boat operators-To keep the tourists happy and to get those big tips your wanting-Play more Bob Marley!-He IS Jamaica!
Yea-I hear ya-Me and a few of my friends went down there and came back fast-Tooo much culture difference-Like day and night-I have always felt there should be 2 Californias on the map-North and South-As a young surfer the water in San Francisco was much colder but the waves much bigger-and the weather was alot colder up North-but it was my home and I still love The City-Bagdad By The Bay-home to the longest running party on Earth!-I checked out your site and it looks good-I can always use tech help and you also know the groups that matter-lol-see ya there sometimes-
man do i wish i could have seen some of those concerts. the origional allman brothers band, grateful dead, jimi hendrix, the doors, bob marley, ccr, led zeppelin, the who, and many others. it all sounds great i can hear their records but i can never live those live shows, but many people younger than me will say the samething about the shows im seeing now.
Ya know-I spent many hours in those concert halls and at the time alot of those groups were brand new and I guess they figured they would use us acid soaked hippies for a testing ground for their new bands!-Some of the groups I saw that had never even put out an album yet or had JUST put out the 1st one were like Creem-Zepplin-Airplane Dead-Quicksilver-on and on-to be fair though alot of these performances were not always so great-Remember they were young and new and live-so-go to THE VAULT RADIO and listen to the groups live from the 60s-Great site and I was there for many of them!-and still not committed to an institution for the musically insane! ie.Blue Cheer front row on the floor on lysergic-MEDIC !!!-LOL
Oh man I was at the Kaleidoscope, which used to be the Moulon Rouge, and later was the Aquarius Theatre, and I don't have a clue what it's called now. Anyway we were trippin hard and went to see some band we never heard of called Blue Cheer. That was the first time I saw and heard Marshall Stacks. It was a friggin wall of amps. Blue (pun intended) us away. "Won't somebody tell me what's wrong...tell me what's wrong with me?" LOL My old lady got tickets to a show at the Roxy in Hollywood from a friend. I had to go up to Santa Cruz to photog a wedding, so I missed the show. It was Bob Marley and The Wailers, and she sat at a table with Bianca Jagger, Joe Cocker and George Harrison. Mick was getting drunk next door at the Rainbow. I'm still kicking myself over that one. Natty Dread is still my favorite of his albums. If you want to hear something wild check out Natacha Atlas' album Something Dangerous, a track called Eye of the Duck (with TUUP & Princess Julianna) It's sort of Arabic Rap Reggae in a Rub a Dub style. There is some really weird good stuff out there. I find these times are just as exciting for music as it was back then.
Yea-Those guys were a trip-They lived in S,F at the time and it was a local rumor goin around about these guys with all this wall of sound-They had not put out an album yet and were still unknown-Well-I'm sittin at my favorite spot on the floor at Winterland-Dead center stage about 10 ft. back-I forgot who played first but my ears were still ringin-Probably the Airplane-So-Intermission and I am now peaking on Owsley acid-These guys start hauling out these stacks of Marshalls and start stackin up and up-I am cookin now and this is lookin scary!-Then the drummer comes out and sets up his kit then pulls out a fuckin hammer and starts NAILING the drums to the floor!-It was then that it dawned on me that I was waaaay tooo Highhhhh to be THAT CLOSE!-Too late-to fried to move-could barely walk!-They come on and absolutely created such a roar of sound and feedback and wa-wa distortion and it was great-Summertime Blues with the floor shaking!-And kids today think their boom box car stereos are bad?hahaha-Try Blue Cheer up close on lysergic some time-I lost 30% of my hearing that night-never got it back -but it was like laying on the deck of a aircraft carrier and having the jets taking off over your head-big boom!!!
-Actually-I have many times because through the years there have been many people asked me the same thing-I am not a writer-I am a pretty good story teller and as I know longer mess with chemicals my recall of earlier times is real good-Actually improving as timegoes by-So-yes; the brain cells can rebuild after being bombarded!---So-Let me know if you want me to put stuff on tape-Tell ya what Dolly -You do the set up and I'll give lots of stories-all true-and many very funny-as well as dumb!-But hey-Everything was new-and we were all trying out new things-some worked some didin't -How much of a cut do you need to be the agent/producer?
Wow-First let me say you must have had one great old lady not to run off with "the band"-lol I really don't think I would have felt that safe leavin my woman at a table with all those guys-alone?-wow-big time trust there bro! congadulations-Most girls I met at concerts in San Francisco would have been back stage so fast gettin it on with the group that you would just see a flashing blurr as she is being "introduced? to the boys in the band-that would be primaraly the younger ones-The older and wiser hippy ladies knew better-I have never heard of that artist you mentioned but Bob Marley is always on my play list!-I never did get to see him live for some reason-Was he around in the 60s? Don't know his bio actually but I don't recall him ever comin to town back then-I may be wrong-
I graduated high school in the late 70s. I listened to Billy Joel and Blondie. Disco was also quite popular and the BeeGees had a nice sound. HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE ?
No the Bob Marley thing was somewhere around '75 or '76? I'm not sure of the exact date, but it was shortly after "Natty Dread", which is my favorite of all his stuff, was released.
I have a recording of Bob and the Wailers playing in Oakland...i think it was '76 or'77?? dont quite remember the date
Bob Marley played his final concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 23, 1980. The live version of "Redemption Song" on Songs of Freedom was recorded at this show.
