Is it the fish, because he can't leave the water?
Is it the snake, because he can't walk?
Is it the sloth, because he is slow?
Is it the bacteria, because he is small?
Is it the mosquito, because everyone hates him?
Is it the human, because he has laws?
Is it the ant-eater, because he has a limited diet?
Is it the firefly, because he can't hide?
Or is it perhaps another animal?

"Who do you think has more freedom? The married man in America or the single man in communist China? I gotta go for the single guy in communist China. C'mon, no contest. You know...I mean, I'm a married guy in America. I can leave the country, but I can't leave my house. You know...They can leave the house, but they can't leave the country. I'll go for that; I like that better. I'm not going to Europe, where the hell am I going..." ~ Larry David

Animals in factory farms, since they are deprived from any form of freedom except getting food and generally stay in small habitats against their wil their whole freaking lifel. So this includes more than one kind of animal. Pigs and chickens are good examples.

Hasn't the awareness of time gave us the insight to plan things and so make more of ourselves and also create more freedom for some?

Every animal has its limits. If the fish doesn't want to leave the water, if he still unfree?

I wouldn't count factory farms because that is not natural. Yes, those animals are cooped up, but not because of their own nature.

It also keeps people chained to the past or the future

And creates unnecessary stress because our days are planned out by the minute (most of us who work for a living at least )

And just look at how many people come here seeking advice because they don't understand how to meditate.' People are forgetting how to live in the moment which is where any free creaturelives

So a human with unneccessary stress is more unfree than a chicken in a pen?? :p

yes, when you work there is a large chunk of time that is planned around time (although not really by the minute for most jobs), but during time off work you are still largely free to live in the moment.

animals that don't have concepts of time (as far as we know) still have to do work, as in hunting for food, etc.. it's just based more on dropping what they're doing and getting that food right when the opportunity arises. so in a way, they're less free to live in the moment since at any moment they could be interrupted with work, while people can usually confine their work to a certain chunk of time.

anyway, awareness of time doesn't force people to not live in the moment. it just gives people the freedom to choose whether or not to live in the moment.

Adult humans. For most little kids, every day is a celebration of just being alive.

Most adults are more constrained by their own minds than they are by anything in the external world.

If a chicken has no knowledge that it is stuck in a pen then it has the illusion of freedom

And of course the same concept applies to humans
