Now first I have to tell you Canadians, I am not comparing you to Americans. I know you don't like that, I don't blame you. You are distinct country, a distinct culture. You were never part of the 19th century American Empire, you were actually part of the British empire. And I'm sorry to have to point out, but you are on average much more law-abiding than Americans too. That having been said, what is the name of accent or accents you talk with? I know most Americans talk with what is called a Midwestern accent. I talk with a Midwestern accent, because I am from Michigan. The next most common accent I guess is Southern accent, or the Southern accents. And there are other accents like the New England accent, the Bronx accent. Some people say there is a separate Brooklyn and Boston accent too. But the thing that confuses me is that although you are not Americans, you seem to talk with a general North American accent. I know Americans can sometimes lie and claim they are Canadians, and usually they get away with it. On the news once there was an American hiding out in the UK. And he told everyone he was Canadian. But no one suspected he was lying. I also know that about 20-30 years ago they were saying some people from metro Detroit went across the Detroit River to Windsor, Canada. And they claimed they were Canadian citizens to get the free health care. And again, they usually got away with it. Is there a general North American accent in Canada? What do YOU call your accent? I'm sure you call it Canadian. But are their subdivisions of it, like I described above for the US? Also, a couple more things just to tell you what I do know. I've noticed people from Nova Scotia, Canada seem to have a slight Scottish accent. And I also have noticed a dead giveaway someone is from Windsor (we get a lot of tourists where I live) is they say "AWW-t" instead of just "out", like we would say it. (IOW, think of the phrase How Now Brown Cow.) Also, there was a Canadian man in my community college class in 1994. And I just remember he kept saying "PROH-gress" instead of progress like we'd say the word. But that's all I know for sure.
