I never thought of myself as a hippy until I was 16 and people started calling me one. So I sat down one day (when I was bored) and pondered on it. Was it my long crazy hair? Was it my bright colorful clothes? The fact that I'm a vegetarian? My liberal beliefs? I think that it just boils down to love and respect for everything, and standing up for things that aren't right. I decided that my ethics make me a hippy. So I'm curious, what do you guys think makes a hippy a hippy?
many many many things can make you a hippie sure theres the hair n clothes thing that might get ya called a hippie but im not really sure clothesd or hair really make u anything but then theres the head and the heart either can make you a hippie if your ideals are not typical of normal society, but rather center on peace social justivce , spiritual growth, healling, love, especialy the universal unconditional type if your heart leads you to care more for your fellow man then for wealth and fame and power if you chooser a lifestyle other then what most society accepts as normal if you refuse to fight except if the fights for change theres so ma ny things that can make you a hippie, thats why hippies are so hard to define don't be a hippie be a hip I
Yeah, soaringeagle has hit the nail on the head. I think it comes down to just thinking outside the mainstream, and not accepting societal values all the time.
Hippies died off in the 70's. Your ethics, bright clothes, long hair really mean nothing except you're a wanna be hippy! Hippies don't exist anymore, it's a thing of the past.
Hippy is a label. Don't change who you are just for that label. Just be yourself, learn to love, and you won't need to be a hippy. You'll be content with being you.
Hippie is a word with an unsatisfying vague definition on which many people who look or feel to do something good emphase too much on.
I am a old hippie but have changed over the year's. Still have one friend that live's or try's to live like we did. Leo is just to hard to live like we did in the good old day's. Flower power to you my friend..
I was called a hippy in the 70's cause I looked like one but I was just me and havin a fuckin blast at the time...
Thats so true jnorton... if my parents knew me back then they would have shat.. but over the time I HAVE TOLD THEM and its all funny now but then... shit... "those people" were over there not here, but they found out eventually one was living with them haha I guess they never clued in (nah they didknow but they were the coolest parents) on my long hair, music, and my psychedelic eyes to realise I was one of them.
information on wikipedia is user-submitted and not necessarily correct. (soaring eagle, as someone else said, really has hit the nail on the head).
I think Hippie is part other peoples thinking. Here is my case in point. My son enlisted in the air force for college money. He went to Alaska to serve. No killing and a lot of nature. During the 3 yrs of service he has repeatedly been told by his fellow airmen that his parents (my wife and I) sound like Hippies. He doesn't know what he is saying to lead them to this conclusion. He has not shown them any pics. Ya I do have long hair but thats not it. I tell him to thank them for us and remember this is a compliment and not a insult. I never thought about the Hippie label until he brought it up. Now that I have been thinking about it I guess I am. So a real Hippie is someone that doesn't try to be a Hippie, you wont realize it until someone else points it out. That's a true Hippie. Be yourself, that is all you have to do to be REAL at who ever you think you are. Live with LOVE in your heart, share LOVE from your heart = A good lifeeace: Keven

love, respect, definitley. easy going, peace wanting. free, free of inhibition, free of will and isnt influenced on their beliefs and knows what they stand for and wont easily be defied. having an explorative life without holding back, being very roaming. accepting. nowhere near conceited, very giving, thoughtful. thats what comes to mind for me. i think being a pothead, though stereotypical, tends to be fitting, [and in some cases doing harder drugs(not like all hippies do coke and H, or that any do. but when someone is addicted i think their image starts to slowly turn to drop-out junkie, but thats not always true either)] long hair and beards usually, maybe even rasta or tie dye/trippy clothes, hemp. just natural, loving. i think kevin above covers it fairly well.
you're a hippy if you do what you like, love everybody, and don't take any crap. the bellbottoms, grateful dead, liberal politics and organic food are secondary. it's not about the look, it's about the attitude! (besides, I wear mostly black, only like one grateful dead album, am a moderate and I just ate a steak, but my friends and i are hippies.)
