like, do you take more pride in the fact that we dont have pansy beer, or the fact that our hockey is amazing? My pride comes from the global opinion of Canada: clean, peace keeping, and polite. I LOVE how we dont have to hide our nationality when we travel cuz we arent terrorists like some neighbours to the south.... so what gives you the most pride?
You have no say, no control, and no decision about what nation you are born into. Pride should be reserved for things like the completion of goals or tasks. FUCK CANADA.
I don't want to say fuck Canada, but I feel the same way you do about pride, hence my snotty comment about Canada's achilles heal, it's music scene. I have no problem saying the same thing to fellow Americans, this type of pride is divisive to the world.
If Canada were a woman and I lived in a fairy land then I just might fuck Canada. Overall I think I love this wonderful country of ours. I mean it's clean and the people are passive. Once we find out things about our government it doesn't try to hide it. I love you Canada!
Actually, that's not entirely true. The US has probably more quality beers than Canada does. The thing is, when most people think of American beer, they think of crap like Budweiser and Coors. It's kind of like Americans who think the only beer that comes from Canada is Molson and Labatt (which are not a lot better than the worst American beers). There are some great beers that come from both Canada and the US, though most people have only heard of the most popular ones, which are often the most crappy ones. Canada has one of my favorite breweries in the world, though, which is Unibroue. Molson and Labatt, on the other hand, are pretty much the Coors and Budweiser of Canada, though Molson Canadian is slightly better than most of the mass-produced American beers.
I like how Canadians are more interested in our politics then there own, cause lets face it, Ahahahaha, Canada. You terrorists are next! USA #1!
i dont have pride in being canadian its not liek i hate this place, i just dont have any major feelings... i dont get all the fuss about countries.all these peopel fighting over blocks of land that are theirs and killing each tohers hearts for it. its a big block of land with a border around it and a sign in the middle saying canada. and then there are the laws saying that youre born here, youre canadian. youre not anything. youre yourself and a country doesnt have to stand there and complete you. for example, in my schol, 90% of the girls (its an all girl school) are italian. do you know how much they need to rub it in my face to make me understand that italians so call "rock" and all this viva italian shit. to me its just a piece of land that resembles a mans "equipment" with another big border on it. i should be proud to be canadian because theres a singer called avril lavigne who can't sing and resembles a racoon? and i should be proud to be canadian because there are so many new bands that suck ass and are ruining the real rock n roll with their copies of the first of the first? poeple fighting over leaders they want to lead the people within our borders? yes everyone thinks canada is a clean place .. helloooo have you ever been to montreal? ive almost gotten raped 8 times by these freaks.. we're just people who have settled and resided on a piece of environment.. thats been taken over by people who want to lead and have given it a name of their own. all these victories of america, and all these victories of this country and that country... they arent yours.. their the people's.. and i dont tihnk that it should stand for everyone within those borders becuase most of them werent the ones fighting their asses, or working hard to maek some cool new movie.. and about the terrorists downt he south.. its not america's fault that they've got asses in their borders. i just had a big argument with some person about "god bless the world and not god bless america" about all that. its so stupid how people fight for mother natures amazing creations... Yeah i'm with you.
division is americans waving their flags all over the place after finally being attacked on their own soil... why be proud that someone hates you enough to hurt you? I find it selfish to take pride in myself and my actions, so i take pride in my vcountry. i dont flaunt the fact that im canadian, but i do enjoy travelling and having people appreciate that im not from a terrorist country.
Before an answer I should point out two things. First, The United States of America are the single greatest military force to have ever existed. Their military is larger than the next five nations [military] combined. Second, Al Qaeda as an entity isn’t stupid. Why be proud that someone hates you enough to hurt you? In the Americans case it is because their antithesis is doing the attacking. When the greatest enemy of the free world chooses America as its target, it is out of knowledge that the US is the capital of the free world. For someone who is patriotic, there is no better country to be proud of. That is very interesting. Why do you think it is selfish to be proud of your actions? [that is, unless you are someone or doing something you find immoral or wrong] Nonetheless you may have good reasons. Just consider this, the thing that Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein are fighting and dying for is not a country or a religion. They don’t fight for land. They aren’t fighting Americans. When Bush says "if you are not one of us, you are one of them" he doesn’t mean if you aren’t an American you are a terrorist. He knows what is at the heart of the conflict. It is a war for supremacy of fundamentals. The terrorists are desperate to do what they can to stop the cultural and political movement of possessive individualism . This is the content of the expanding "global culture". It is the banal nationalism inherent in a statement that reads: ‘since I don’t see it fit to take pride in my self I take pride in my nation.’ that is a direct reaction to possessive individualism. It is the fundamental of ethnic nationalists, like the Taliban. It is the fundamental that is at war with possessive individualism. It is the fundamental war between the terrorists and the free world. I am not calling you a terrorist. Banal nationalism is very general. It encompasses the people that stand for the national anthem every morning at school. It includes the people that see a red leaf on a flag and admire. And just as banal nationalists are not exclusively terrorists, possessive individualists are not all supporters of war. You think I am selfish because I am proud of my accomplishments and you may be right. But We All Shine On, considering the alternative, I feel pretty good with my choice. Good day.
That was well said OSF. I live in the US, and I think patriotism is kinda a outdated notion, but the USA is a really great place to live. We are an incredibly affluent, free, people, and we were attacked by theocrats who want the world the way it was back in the 900's. We'll you know what, the world sucked in the 900's, there was no real medicine, people had real wars all the time, women had no rights, commoners had no rights, anarchy ruled aside from a few tight rules layed down by religous bodies that tyranical moarchies selectivly enforced. Its a war of civilizations, there are some people in the world who want nothing more then to destroy western society. The US is the biggest target, but Al Quiada hates Canada. Canada is a largly christian nation, where women can vote, and whose people enjoy freedom and prosperity. Don't think for a second that you are safe from what these people despise about the west. We all shine on, our countries have been best freinds since yours was founded, how can you blame us for having a bit of a pack rat mentality, and shoving overbearing patriotic dribble down our throats after we were attacked. Trust me, americans were terrified. Hey your right... Avril Lavigne does look like a racoon.
Our music scene rocks. And theres such a variety of indy artists out there, you just never hear of 'em cause we don't have major production studios like in the states... And to be honest I prefer it this way. It keeps the music about the music, not about the money. And I am proud of our country. I was lucky enough to be born in a country where I don't fear for my life, where we have free health care, I never have to worry about starving and I like the way our government is moving, decriminalizing pot, safe injection sites, homosexual marriages. I travel across the border to Detroit and I am scared for my life, I don't travel across the border much, but the last time I was there, me and my friends pulled up at a stop sign and some crack head leapt out of the bushes and ran at our car with a louisville slugger! Now I'm not saying that our country is perfect. Far from it, but I would much rather be living here than south of the border. I want to travel the world, see what it's like elsewhere, but I don't think I could ever call another country my home /End Rant
See i could live in another country, I like the US, but i am not PROUD of it, there is no reason for me to feel pride in where I happened to be from.......... How would you feel if i continuosly ripped on Canada, not just the government, but constantly calling it a nation of terrorists etc. and actually attacking the people, because thats what I see on these boards a lot. It does not make you a better person depending on where or where you aren't from.By the way, Detroit IS the roughest city in the US, there is no wonder you feel threatened there. PS it may not be pc on these boards, but I want al Qeada gone from the Earth. Not everything the US does is wrong, and it has, upon occasion, stood up when other countries didn't have the guts to, or were busy being isolationists.....
Patriotism in itself is pretty stupid, no matter what country you are from. I think someone above stated it nicely by using the word "outdated." Other than differences in government, I think Americans and Canadians are pretty much the same, and it's nonsense to dismiss someone simply because of their nationality. That's no worse than disliking a person because of their race. To infer that it's all right to be Canadian and patriotic, but not American and patriotic, is rather hypocritical. To infer that a country is a "terrorist country" is ignorant, because you are in a sense inferring that every person from that country is a terrorist. There really is no such thing as a "terrorist nation." People are terrorists. Not nations. Don't be so narrow-minded.
Haha, well there was that one thread. It was all in fun though. I don't mind hearing some people saying 'fuck america' now and then either, I say it sometimes. Fuck America. But the thing is, I dont think some people have any sense of preportion about the whole thing, I think they really don't like us sometimes. As if they think the biggest problems in the world would be solved if there was no US. Our footprint these past 200 years has been overwelmingly positive, and we're pretty much at the tipity top, so I dont mind if people take some pot shots at us ^-^. But some people really need to put the US in context, I mean, we're still friends.
I love the fact that we have respect from other countries... and how we're admired. I think we deserve it... and I hope we continue with it.
I was born a dual citizen- US and Canada. I call myself an American. I take no pride in being Canadian.
Why don't you take any pride in being Canadian? We resisted participating in the war, we allow gay lovers to profess their love, we have beautiful land and animals - still healthy and not -totally- covered in corporate smog. Soooo, why don't you take pride in any of that?... ANd... Why do you take pride in the opposite?
