So my hubby and I are going away for 3.5 days. Not long at all. So i'm at my neighbours house and she says if you don't give me your house key i'm calling the humane society on you your inhumane. Your leaving your cats all by themselves. I lay 6 bowls of food down 6 bowls of water down bowls of ice cubes the toilets are there and she threatened me. Thats like me threatening to call CAS on her shes 67 y/o. WTF, i don't understand ppl. I NEVER EVER get to go out of the house i work go to school and she throws that at me. I called the vet and htey reassured me nothing would/could be done its stupid people have so much time on their hands.
I think that I would NEVER give a neighbor like that keys to my house. You would have the devils own time getting all the copies back from them.
I would alert your local humane society, animal control and sheriffs department as to the threats being made by your neighbor. In this way, if she should attempt to harass you or your animals in the future by making a false report, you will have her threats on record in advance and this will be of great help should she attempt to cause your family any further unwarranted problems. If she should approach you again in this way, simply tell her that you have already reported her threating behavior and I have a feeling this will end her aberrant behavior with finality. The best of luck to all of you!
well i do think your neighbor is being unreasonable with her threatening behaviour, but i also think that 3.5 days is too long to leave an animal unattended. what if one was to get hurt or sick the 1st day you were gone? also if cats dont eat regularly, the can suffer with fatty liver syndrome. yes i know you are leaving food down, but what if your disappearance stresses one of them so much, they stop eating? how will you know? the syndrome needs emergency veterinary attention if the cat is to survive. i'm not saying this to have a go, or be nasty but it is something that need to be considered. so what are the alternatives? is there someone you do trust who could have your key who would come and see to your cats? is there someone you know who would like a break for a few days and come house sit for you? if not how about call the humane society and see if they have a list of pet sitters they could refer you to. one of them may be able to take your kitties for a few days! be careful calling and telling them about your neighbor, because if you tell them you are leaving your cats more than 24 hours, you may find them agreeing with your neighbor! the vets may not agree, but if they are wrong that is no use to you if your cats are taken. (fwiw, the rspca here would take a dim view of leaving any animal that long, and could end up with a prosecution of abandonment). do you generally get on with said neighbor and usually trust them? if so why not take up the offer? do you have a cat flap? if you do, and you have no alternative, start feeding your cats outside (allowing them access inside via the cats flap, and take the neighbor up on their offer to feed the cats, but have her do so from outside the house
Yes i had my upstairs neighbour look after them. I thought about that afterwards and i have grand champion show cat that is the most attention seeking cat and when we go away she gets really upset. So we had a really nice couple from upstairs look after them. LilBoPeep really enjoyed their company. Thanks. I understood what you were saying.
Pahaha, we leave our cat for about 5 days, but we have someone come and check up on her every day. Cats know how to get around on their own.
i wouldn't take that as a insult. the last thing i would want to happen ... is my cat or cats get hurt or die or starve. At most we have come home at times and seen 2 bowls of food and water still left down. But now that this neighbour next door is being nasty, we have such wonderful ones up from us we'll have them watch our cats from now on. We never go away. I work and go to school. It was just a new years thing we went to. I wish i had a vk, i'd bring my cats with me hahaha.
I agree with Toby up there You're doing nothing wrong, I mean you give them, it sounds, plenty of food & water so...dont worry just go to them and heck let them even come in to check it out so theyll see first-hand that it is alright and the heck with your neighbor
