I don't have a dog, that husky doesn't belong to me, It's a neighbors dog. She doesn't get any attention from her owners, and she runs off.

They are gone all day and when they come home they just feed her and leave her outside. They had one of those perimeter collars on her for a while but apparently she withstood the pain long enough to escape the perimeter fence. They had that collar on so tight, and looked like it hadn't been removed for months when I first saw her. She had so many burrs under that collar...

after I meticulously removed them and loosened the collar, she started coming to my place and howling for me to come out, go for runs down to the river. She doesn't even respond to the name they gave her, "Sadie"... so I call her "Tomita" She responds to that for me.

Well, I hope you don't see how your neighbours treat their dog is the inevitable way to domesticate an animal. I can see how that made you say that though. But the domestication of certain animals seems not cruel at all (including most horses and dogs).

What, you must think I'm some kind of simpleton if you think thats the omly reason. pfft!
I'm not going to debate with you why the domestication of animals is inherently cruel.
Do you know what it means when they "break" a horse? It quite literally means breaking their spirit!
Why don't you explain to me why breaking a horses spirit so they can be ridden is just a big barrel 'o laughs for them?

    Nope.

That's fine, you were right this isn't the right thread for it anyway. I know though that bad examples do not make the general statement true ...

Sigh. I did not say it is so... It is simply not the only way to domesticate a horse.

I can see where you're coming from Gongshaman, but where do you think civilisation would be without the domestication of the horse.I also think horses and humans have a natural affinity - you could almost say it's in their breeding.By the way - what did you have for breakfast?

Natural affinity? Why don't you go to the southwest US where there are thousands of wild horses and see if you can get within 100 yards of them.
I can't speculate on how our civilization would have been without the domestication of horses, just as I can't speculate on if we had never become agricultural...all I can say is it would have been different.

BTW I had a coupla handfulls of raisin bran and a banana for breakfast :)

I guess I'm biased about horses. My Grandfather was a professional jockey,my Mum rode and my Uncle owns race horses.

You're probably right about those wild horses though.

It's cool, I don't hold anything against people for it. We can't help the culture we are raised up with. There was a time when beasts of burden were probably necessary. We are no longer in those times and most domestication of animals is done purely for human pleasure. We are fuckin' weird creatures.

Depends how you look at it. Even outside of the cultural box I can't see how your original statement regarding domestication of animals is right. But we can't and don't have to agree on everything at all of course ;)

Oh ok. I love bananas too, seems like they ship them a lot greener than they used to though... The organic food store I go to sells the 'overripe' ones for half price, I guess a lot of people can't stand to see the slightest brown spots on bananas. lol
