what defines a nerd?

are you a nerd?

yknow, i think i am a nerd, i am not into today's hits, i don't like Lynsey Lohan, i watch independant and foreign movies a lot, know way too much about music genres and subgenres and sub-subgenres, i read, i am very cultured, can talk about politics over fashion.. i fuckin love old school Super Mario and cheered at the last Indiana Jones premiere.. oh and asked everyone to shut up when trailers for The Dark Knight came on (before going to see the movie at midnight on premiere night, of course); there's little things, yknow?

 

i think i'm a nerd because, for the most part, i'm socially akward and not possessing those things that make people un-nerdy.

Nerd is just another silly label. It really means nothing.

Traditionally, a nerd is someone who is very awkward socially. They often have a narrow range of interests. They tend to be skinny and have an odd or "outdated" sense of fashion. That is what I think of when I hear the word nerd.

 

i love fantasy, sci fi, ps3, computer games, i have a degree in molecular biology and genetics, so i guess that classifies me as a nerd. but people never guess any of those things about me until i tell them. then they cant figure it out. cos i should be socially retarded but im not. and i met a lot of awkward weirdos during my course.

 

haha yea, its like me! people would never know i love sci-fi and fantasy too.. i am not socially awkward, but.. everything else that defines a nerd, usually.. hah..

I would define it as a socially awkward introvert.

I have certain nerdy traits. Others, not so much. Like most people.

Cate: like everything that is thought of as cool, it's the affectation of nerdiness that is cool. Not nerdiness itself.

A genuine nerd is someone who secretly wants to take over the world with computers because he used to get hung on coathooks in school.And because he fantasises about being blown out by his animated online girlfriend.

But seriously are they socially inept because theyre just inept?Or because their brains are too full of computer programming to do anything.
Or because people hate them so much , they have to sit infront of computers all day?
