My mom gets asked that question all of the time. She even had one employer demand to know if she could speak english the first time she turned in her resume.

I'll admit, I stay away from the sun so that my skin can be as lily white as possible. Whenever I leave the U.S. I get asked if I can speak english by Americans. haha My mom was asked if she was from Peru, and I was asked for directions in broken spanish when we went on vacation a couple of years ago.

I can understand people's confusion with my mom....but I'm white enough thanks to my dad that I should pass as any other white girl.

no one remains unsurprised when I tell them where I'm from, and some people make some outrageously off-target guesses. and my Canadian/American accent doesn't do much to help that situation, I suppose.

my dads side is easier, dad's dad is slovak, he grew up in slovakia
my dad's mom is irish, but looking into our history we were actually welsh living in ireland
that history also has a king, king cadwalader, some scholars believe he was the true king arthur and we have a roman emperor too
