that doesn't offend me at all, I think it's very true. It's weird because lately I have been eying more elegant clothing and stuff, not old lady by any means but very timeless and classy. I feel dreads limit the styles I can pull off. I feel like a trendy grunge punk. A lot of factors are changing in my life right now... like I quit smoking and now I drink less.. aggressively.. I'm more serious about working and school and I'm about to get control of savings money that my parents and grandparents set up for me... I don't know, I hate being judged by my hair, too. And I miss having boy short hair :D

but really, fuggit, I will hate myself if I cut them now and never give them a chance to get super long. I'm just such a fickle chick

I think that you should do whatever you want to do and fuck whatever people think of you. Your post sounded so much like me. When I got married at 21 I was like okay! Time to be a grown up. My wardrobe became so grown up and not grungey at all, I brushed out my dreads for my wedding and looking back I hate myself for doing that. Deep down I was depressed as fuck so I reverted to my former self got my dreads back and I love it. Just because you feel you should 'grow up' doesn't mean you have to.

I've been attempting to make a pendant today but I am really unsure whether I will redo it or just keep it and try to make a better one next.

ZILLA: I see where your mom is coming from...but on the flipside you are where you have been and shine bright from where your'e going...ya know? My man has a bead that I gave him when we first met...he put it in his dreads 7 years ago when his dreads where shoulder length and now the bead is almost to his ass and were married and have a life together! I see it as a symbolically beautiful thing. I have a piece of his heart, and I have my very own "growth" marker in his dread. Or a piece in his evolutionary timeline.
Personally, I view locks as a visual and tangible testament to how much Ive shred societal norms and expectations and pursued my own heart, path, and vision. Without trying to sound all crazy hippy like...I genuinely view dreadlocks as roots to the soul. Long, mature natural dreads to me signifies a soul that has learned to let go and pursue more important things...
I dont mean that last part to sound at all condensending to non natural method dreadies. My dreads are a mix of all methods. lol
Basically...your moms view is but just one viewpoint on dreadlocks. Take from it what you will...but dont narrow yourself to it unless you find it really resonates truth for you.

Wow zilla that is deep.. xD Your mum obviously has alot of experience, but I agree with mandy and claire wholey and totally. The bead thing is so cute :)

I think you'll regret cutting. I was thinking today that my dreads are starting to annoy me, always in the way, not long enough to tie up but short enough to get in my face and they are heavy and I can always feel them on my scalp... bah but I love them so much, and they are a part of me, my growth, my changes, so meh ^^

Maybe you are having a mid-dread crisis :p

And gretaoto, that pendant is beautiful :) Don't undo it all!! Make more!!

    haha totally DV!

and mandy, you are very right, and that is exactly how I have always felt about my hair, but my mom shed new light on the situation, you know? I get the "dreads are dirty/nasty" shit and I can deal with that, but the not letting go part? this whole time I thought my dreads were a part of letting go, but in some ways she really is right.

anyway, you put it beautifully, and DV is right, I would regret cutting SO much. But thinking about this is giving me new awareness about just why I have dreads.

n Claire- of course growing up doesn't meaning denying myself! but I do have some childish issues that I need to cope with, and I have to change my lifestyle to do so. I guess I'm just wondering if cutting is part of the change. but right now I feel like I shouldn't, so I won't!

I have driven with my father 3600 km in 39 hours. I am wiped out.

Zilla - I can appreciate what your mom is saying... but what about the symbolism of starting them?

I personally do not see dreads as being age appropriate for anyone. They suit all ages and many different types of lifestyles. And I can promise that I am not trying to relive any of my teenage years. In fact, I feel they add maturity to me in a weird kind of way because of the self confidence I have now. In saying all of that, when it is time to cut or brush, you will because it will be the right time. Whether now or later. I am not a dreadhead... Dreads are a part of me. (And a huge congrats on the neice!!!)

Time to take pooch outside for a bit.

Thanks so much for the responses, I love you guys!
I am in love with my dreads, I really need to stop letting my mother get to me

I got asked if I was a natural redhead yesterday :p I think this color is here to stay, possibly forever. I always feel amazing when I have red hair. Deano says god fucked up and gave me black hair instead of red.

Im nearly 17, mum is 51, there is such a big age gap between my mum and i that sometimes i think were on two different planets. She hates my dreadlocks and all dreadlocks togetehr for that matter, with a passion, and she cant wait for me too cut them off. (im telling her not to hold her breath, im keepin em for quite a while yet). Parents can be truely bothesome when it comes to how you wanna express yourself. Mum just think im going through a phase, but hey whatever

Thats mad, at my school i spend my entire agriculture lesson with the bunnys, they need plent of attention, because sadly theyre continuously being attacked by rats in the night, a couple of the babys have died recently due to the bites becoming infected, and nobody noticing. Problem is its not like you can put ratsack in a rabbit hutch or anything, because the bunnys just eat the shit, its hard man
