    Hello,

I dropped the protestant work ethic somewhere in the eighties of the last century. I became an engineer and unix hacker then and suddenly... life was good ;).

Ummm good for you? I don't know how it had to do anything with my post since I was merely quoting the Benedictine motto, so it obviously has nothing to do with protestants.

    Hello,

basically, the protestant work ethic sees work as a duty, that neither should be questioned nor should work be fun. Work should be a hardship. That is not different from Benedict's motto.

Not really. It's mostly about believing that pleasure is in hard work.

    Hello,

for the monks the meaning of work is not to get things done, but to humble their souls. Like Sisyphus they would roll a stone uphill again and again to reach this goal. I wouldn't call this pleasure of hard work.

    Regards
    Gyro

    Hello,

    do you?

Well, the monks don't go that far as the protestant work ethic, but the sense is the same. Maybe we should reread 'Work in Ancient and Medieval Thought' and the attached literature list to get a better view on that topic.

    Regards
    Gyro
