Im 21 and about to grduate, live in the US. a friend of mine is deaf, but extremely outgoing and adventurous. we both have wanderlust. he just messaged me, asking if i wanted to walk with him from switzerland to nepal or pakistan. were stubborn, and if we attempted this i damn well think wed get it done no matter the cost. im not kidding.

    A. how long would this take?

    B. are there places in between that are hostile to westerners that we would need to avoid?

    C. are we crazy?

I can answer C for you-
    No.

Im not sure of the practicalities...but if you want to travel, do it. This is our world, and good for you for wanting to see what weve been blessed with

P.s-maybe just a little help with transport would be good;) sounds like a hell of a long way...

    a) it would depend on how fast u walk, I suppose
    b) would have to do a search online for them, I don't have my swiss/pakistani hostile area guide handy
    c) yes, but it'd be something you'd remember for a long time :)

That's about 4,000 miles to Nepal.

I'm going to assume your going to need at least a weeks worth of supplies, tents, wet weather gear, mountain climbing equipment, so thats at least 200 pounds on your back the entire time.

You'll be traveling across deserts and mountains, through regions where you won't be able to speak a word to ask for supplies, Through Kazakhstan which is mostly desert and people will think you are rich, and might hate you, then through Pakistan which is largely run by gangs and warlords, then though India parts of which are so different from central India that exist tribes who practice Cannibalism.

Then you are going to need to climb some more mountains to get to Nepal.

I want you to go somewhere with a track, fill a backpack with 200 pounds of weight, and put on a heavy long sleeved clothing to protect you from the sun, and walk thirty laps around the track. with canteens on both sides.

If you still want to due it after, maybe your a little less insane and naive.

sounds like the kind of risky adventure that's worth every bit of it. and you don't have to go through pakistan to get to nepal. if you did go that way you'd be having to go through cashmere where people who live there have been occasionaly known to shoot at each other over whether they'd rather be part of pakistan or india.

you might be able to avoid that area by going through azerbajan and kazakstan or something like that. i'm not sure how much better that would be if at all.

then again the side of nepal you'd be coming in from that way, the western end of it, is where people are shooting at each other over what kind of politics to have for their government.

at any rate it would make a hell of a book, and or national geographic artical. you consider looking into national geographic sponsership? i have no idea what would be invoulved with that but it's a thought.

i'd definately suggest learning everything you can about every place you'd be passing through, and the most current situation in each and all of them. wouldn't hurt to learn a little of the local languages either.

i mean could you immaging an iraqi citizen trying to do a cross country walk accross america right now without being able to speak any american english?

that's comparable to the situation your contemplating unless you do.

    =^^=

If you get up tommrow and walk 7 and a half miles with a 200 pound backpack, feel free to brag about it tommorow. I could do it, but it's nessecary to get in shape for your 4000 mile trek.

If your serious about this, good luck, but you need to get to work.

You're also going to want to plot your course carefully, and bring a handgun.

Make sure to bring lots of identification and money.

How long would this take? I have no idea. Years?

Maybe you should talk to National Geographic or some adventure magazine to sponsor your trip. You're going to need lots of supplies and not want to carry money with you in a part of the world where ATM's aren't common.

Not to sound like an asshole, but that seems impossible. Something you literally wouldn't survive.

I didn't even mind the risk.

But a 4000 mile journey across sparcely populated areas where poverty is rampant, through deserts and mountains, when you can't communicate with anyone, And people may hate you because of you nationality when your a high school graduate who may or may not be in any kind of shape, sounds nearly suicidal.
