WTF does this mean? When I get a message saying its running low. Should I be doing something different?

My computer is saying this too. Does it have to do with downloading too many things off the internet?

it means theres too much stuff going on at once, the computer has run out of memory...
i never really figured out how to fix it other than restarting, since it was ussualy windows using all the memory rather than the progs i was trying to run... anyway, just restart your computer and that should fix it for the moment
btw, virtual memory is just hard drive space that is used like ram, you can increase but i dont know how off the top of my head since i havent used windows in a while

sounds like you got too much spyware or viruses. that's what i'd be betting on if i ran out of memory.

then again, i got a gig of it. that doesn't happen to me very often. restart your box. update your antivirus. run adaware.

When I was using Windows Millenium I would constanly get messages like that. Something about that OS wouldn't always allow it to release the memory that was just being used for a program you just stopped using. It would just take memory away and not give it back. I had to download a separate program to manually control it myself so I wouldn't have that problem. So if you're a WinMe user then maybe you're experiencing something similar.

With that being said, if you don't actually have enough memory and you're sure you're not infected with spyware and viruses you may just need more. You can operate at 256MB but you can't set your expectations high that you can run several programs at once and view large files. I always used to run low on memory when I used a picture editing program. So it may even depend on the program you are trying to use. If you have 256MB try upgrading to 512MB and you'll totally notice a difference, I can guarantee it. But only upgrade your memory if you are certain that's really what needs to be done. Make sure your not being attacked by spyware and viruses.

Another thing is if you have Kazaa on your machine that could be another reason why you get those messages. I forget the whole deal of how it works but the program somehow gives away your memory or something like that. It's weird and I can't explain it right.

And my final tidbit here is to do the ctrl+alt+delete and see what programs you have running in the background. You might be surprised at how many things are going on that you didn't realize and they're taking away form your computer's performance.
