    How true is the reputation?

My goal is to get accepted to UVM after earning my associates degree here in NJ. I've been to Burlington twice and there seems to be many hippies.

Does anyone know anything further about the hippie scene in Vermont? Is Vermont the place to be for hippies who want to stay in the Northeast?

Vermont is somewhat hippyish. I am currently at Green Mountain College, which is near Burlington, and I have experienced a bit of both sides.

I think Burlington has a really groovy peace center, which I haven't been to yet, but I have heard it's great. I know that overall, Vermont seems fairly liberal.

That said, I'm pretty much going to a hippie college here... at least you'd think it would be. GMC is billed as an "environmental liberal arts school" where an environmental emphasis is put on all the general ed teachings... but overall, the school is not very hippyish.

Certainly, there are lots of drugs to be found, and people claim to be supporters of the natural lifestyle; but all in all, the majority of students do not support hippie ideals, nor even environmental ideals.

In the past month, we have had issues with what I call hate crimes- people vandalizing other students' doors because of an opposition to their sexual orientation; massive littering of recyclables on the part of the student body; and there has been obscene amounts of harassment aimed at the student activists protesting the campus farm's decision to slaughter the farm pigs. The school as an administration will not stand up to give hippies a voice here, and instead wants to focus on pulling in any students who are interested in coming.

I wish my experiences here in Vermont had been pro-hippie and amazing, but so far, it's seemed liberal some places, and very conservative others.

Hopefully this isn't the same for everyone.
