I hate it when I say Im a vegan and people are like..why dont you eat what god put on this planet or god said we are better then the animals and all that walk on this earth and crap like that. im really not trying to be rude and ussaly my responce to this is that i think its wrong to eat animals. it just bothers me how most people always try to tie religion into it..any comments and/or whats the stupidest thing anyones ever said to you about being a vegan/veggie...peace

    Where to start....

I think you'll get a long list for this one, but the thing that immediately springs to mind is the one about how cows and chickens will overpopulate and run rampant through the streets if we stop eating them. There are so many silly things they say...

About the whole god thing, bible thumping types seem to be intolerant of everyone who doesn't think exactly the same way about absolutely everything that they do. Doesn't matter if you're a vegetarian or a homosexual or even just a supporter of a slightly different version of the same religion, they just won't let you be. Best way to deal with it is to shrug and walk away.

long before i became a vegetarian, my aunt attacked me on her "religious" ideas and the consumption of meat. it started as an attack when she found out that in middle and high school i had refused to participate in animal dissection. "But it is God's will."

i'm a vegetarian now and i still do not believe it is a sin against God and creation to not eat meat. we each have to follow our own path and mine is a path without meat. there are a lot of people that beleive that way and support my decision.

My mother said to me once..."God gave us permission to eat meat since he knew our bodies would need it and he also told us to rule over the animals".

My response was that the queen of England rules over her land but she doesn't eat the people of England. And......does God know about soy?;)
I don't really see how God factors into the whole deal. Eating meat might just be okay in God's eyes, but it sure is not okay in mine, and that's what me being a vegetarian is all about.

well the accepted theory of human evolution does indicate that primates were able to out-compete due to meat consumption, so.. your mom was.. kind of right.. haha :) about the needing it thing, i mean.

i dunno i've been veggie so long now i just zone out when people say things. veggie conversations with me now go something like:

    person: "so you're a vegetarian?"
    me: "yep sure am"
person: "you know god wants us to eat meat"
    me: "really?"
person: "yes the bible says so."
me: "it does huh? well isn't that something. so how about that weather?"

person: "you know you need meat. you're not getting enough protein."
me: "really? i wonder if i'll die. guess we'll have to wait and see."

person: "being a vegetarian is stupid."
    me: "ok."

hehe at some point i just stopped having those arguments.

The religious argument is really stupid. Can't think of anything to top that.

My 'friend'* on hearing I was veggie announced that he would eat enough meat for the two of us, as if to compensate. Though he apparently ate that much anyway.

This isn't really to me, but when my mother has told people I'm a vegetarian people have asked 'oh and does she eat fish?'
Course I do, everyone knows they grow on trees

*Inverted commas because he's actually a totally arrogant [expletive] who just hangs out with my other friends.

i agree about the fish thing being pretty dumb. also, when people ask if you'll eat chicken broth in soup and such.

i also hate it very much when people try to tell me i'm not getting enough nutrients/vitamins/iron/protein/whatever other word they read in a magazine. i don't know if these people realize this or not, but before i stopped eating meat, and still now during my non-consumption of said meat, i research nutrition! i don't have some strange desire to die of malnutrition (not that i believe i could on my current diet, but anyway...) people think that they can fight with me about this, when most of them couldn't even tell me what anemia is. its soooo annoying.

i eat a vegetarian diet. very little dairy and eggs. almost vegan. when i eat, it's not only because i'm hungry but because i know i need certain things to keep me healthy. anyone that thinks getting a super sized meal at a fast food drive-thru is better for thembecause it "fills them up and has meat" is a fucking moron. i was never sicker in my life than when i ate meat. i just ate, because "it was the right thing according to the bible to do" a lot has changed in 2000 plus years. sure there are a lot of good morals, values in the bible, but theres no way in the world a human nowadays can live by it %100.

eating animals is just plain wrong!

humans are smart enough, technology is advanced enough, that there is NO need to eat inslaved animals.

The next time someone asks you why you don't eat what God provided (if they ask nasty), you could ask "Do you mean like the locusts and honey that John the Baptist lived off of? What is you favorite recipe for locust?"

Locusts is also a term for the seed of the locust tree. The seeds were ground into powder and mixed with water and baked with honey. This was a food that the poorest of the poor ate.

As for Christians and vegetarianism. I'm a Christian and I belong to a church denomination called The Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The Seventh Day Adventist Church teaches that God intended humans to eat a vegetarian diet. Because of these beliefs the church encourages its members to be vegetarians. Alot of soy based meat substitute companies are owned/operated by Adventists. Some Adventist churchs put on free vegetarian cooking seminars to teach people about vegetarian cooking.

BTW: Both John and Charles Wesly(founders of the Methodist Church) were vegetarian.

Then I have a question.....I read ( I think in another thread here) that you all eat fish despite being vegetarians. Is that true? And if so, why? I'm actually very curious to know more.:)
