I'm not sure which forum is best for this: http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/14234906p-15056346c.html " A Sacramento attorney is suing Sacramento's Main Jail, saying his client's civil and religious rights have been denied since he has been refused a vegan diet. The inmate has been on a hunger strike since March 8, his attorney said." My thought is "What if jails were routinely vegan?" Would that affect the crime rate or recitivism? Is there any religion that requires the eating of meat or meat products? If a kitchen is vegan would that make it glot kosher? Would it make jail keeping more or less expensive? Hmmm...
I was going to make a comment about his not being a vegan for too long in jail but I feel that I must reframe from that sort of talk.
hah... it would be more expensive. if i was stupid enough to get myself thrown in jail i wouldnt expect them to care to feed me a vegan diet. when you go to prison you lose some of your rights.
Plus, wouldn't that be cruel and unusual for the rest of the prisoners? They already have to live in constant fear of sodomy and shankings, now you're going to make them eat lentils all day?
Why would a vegetarian diet be considered cruel? Which would you prefer cruelty to prisoners or to their dinner? (Hmm..some one convicted of animal cruelty claims that a veg. diet is cruel and unusual punishment...Hmm.)
that was great lodui and wow are you fucking kidding me??? you might get a vegan meal on death row for your last meal if your lucky...
I've been known to slap up a few monkeys and rough up the clam a few times, but I wouldn't say cruelty. Seriously though, I dunno to whom he's referring. Maybe he was talking about someone in prison for animal cruelty, although I don't think enough people get sent to prison for that.
Nobody is explaining why a veg. diet would be considered cruel. Please ignore my previous odd asides, why would a vegetarian diet be considered cruel?
well, I'd consider it very cruel, considering I eat nothing but meat, and consider vegetables to be rather gross.
I doubt that you eat nothing but meat. No bread, no cake, no beer, no PB&J? Bellfire, the man is in jail waiting to be tried for eco-terrorism. Being vegan is consistant with the crimes he is accused of.
It's called humor, the lentils bit really emphasies the comedic elements because it's the wackiest legume I can think of. If you'd like to learn more about humor visit your local library. That's only if you find the decay of society amusing. I know I do.
Because no one should be forced to eat food which does not provide his daily value of vitamins, etc. You cannot expect prison to supply dietery supliments, it would cost a fortune.
There are some religions, such as a certain type of Sihk, where a vegan diet is a religious thing. In this sub-religion, all things, including vegetables, are considered to have a soul and worthy of life. Taking their life is a sin, so a lot of the followers of this sub-religion don't eat much period, veggies or not... but definetly not meat. I remember reading about a guy in the US somewhere did go to jail for animal cruelty. He dropped kicked/punted a tiny lap dog, basically turning it inside out from the force of his foot. Needless to say the dog died, and the owners took him to court. He ended up in jail, but i don't know for how long. It was in People magazine whilst I was waiting at the doctor's office.
Hah... Lodui, I didnt really think he was talking about you. and the libraries.. yes... i wont even get into the libraries and the people that every day wait outside and rush in right at opening time and oh no... i cannot discuss them.
maybe decreasing their flesh intake would curb some of their violent tendencies. when my previously vegetarian friend ate meat for a period of time he divulged that he felt the need to go out and kill a cougar with his bare hands. i told him to stop with the steaks, he did and never spoke of the aspiration again. hmmmmmmmm...
