I need some help. I am an Ovo Lacto Vegetarian (Eats eggs and dairy). I have been for eight years. I would like to become a Vegan for two reasons. For mother earth, and because I need to shed a few pounds. Problem is, I really like cheese. My favorite foods include Pizza, Nachos, and Mac and Cheese. Any ideas to help me get vegan?

I've noticed a lot of heavyset people dig cheese a lot.

You might want to reconsider liking cheese.

Believe me there are a LOT better things out there. :)

  4. There are vegan cheese substitutes out there, some of which are rather nice. One or two of them even melt when cooked. :) You're from Pennsylvania: I know there's at least one melty one that you can get in the USA, but I can't remember what the brand is called and I can't find the link. Maybe someone American can help.

Plainly and simply, though, if you want to give up cheese, do it. No foodstuff is irresistible. Your desire to be vegan is stronger than your desire to eat cheese, and you're stronger than you think. Just keep reminding yourself how badly you want this and you'll manage it. Surprisingly soon, you'll find that you've got out of the habit of it.

    Good luck. :)

For mac & cheese a good vegan alternative for me is Road's End Organics - Mac & Chreese. www.chreese.com

Eating vegetarian or vegan is not going to help you lose weight if you eat mostly junk food and foods high in fat and calories (cheese is high in fat). The best thing to do is to start cooking your own meals using fresh ingredients and start eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. This also makes it easier to go veg*an. Try making your own pizza without any cheese. It is surprisingly good.

There are several vegan cheeses. These should be available in your area:
    http://www.imearthkind.com/
    http://www.tofutti.com/btcc.0.asp

JUst try "vegan cheese" in advanced google.

  9. I can name several names if you want them. Try Tofutti and Cheezly for a start. Given that I'm neither American nor Canadian, it seems reasonable that I can't remember off the top of my head the name of a particular brand of melting vegan cheese that's only available in the USA and Canada.

I don't generally mention brand names because this is a worldwide forum. If I were to list UK or NZ brand names, for example, they'd be no use to people outside of those countries. The best advice I can give is to do your own searching. They are out there: use your initiative and your knowledge of your own country and you'll find them. Google is an excellent place to start, as your man above me said.

personally, i am against using too much processed food, the more natural ingreadients, the more better.
BUT! you are only 14 and i admire your decision to become a vegan, so do wahtever you need to stop the dairy... there are so many substitutes.
but: this is what is best for your system and for gaia:
NO gmo food, and i am sorry to tell you this: loads of soya products are probably gmo foods. so if you eat lots of soya products, watch it: look for ecological or other....
    WISH YOU GOOD LUCK!!!

    Thank you :)

I guess I need to proofread my posts too. lol

Bunbury, I was not picking on you and understand why, but I asked this question and have seen others ask too, and people always seem to answer that they know they exist but don't name any brands.

    Just to clarify, this is:
    A) Not major weight loss we're talkin about. Just like, 10 lbs.
    B) I don't spend all my time eating junk. These are just my favorite foods, and I have one of the three probably once a week. Not all three.
Other than that, these are all awesome sudgestions! Thanks!

I love cheese too, to the point where it was very normal for someone to come home to see me eating a 1/2 lb block of cheese right out of the package. Since I figured out what rennet is it's been a lot easier to stay away from it but I have found Horizon cheese doesn't have that gross stuff in it.... but then something happened there too, I'm just turned off by all cheese now. Pizza without cheese is very very good. I made some at home with Pillsbury pizza crust and used an olive oil, garlic and italian seasoning sauce (I have bad reactions to too much tomato) and threw some mushrooms on there. It was very good and I even got some friends hooked on it. Before I tried no cheese I tried making the pizza with Veggie Shreads.... they said it'd melt, well it did I guess, but it just melted into a hard plasticy nasty pile that looked like it'd be good but definately wasn't. So there is a tip for you... veggie shreads might be good tossed on a salad or something, but don't make good pizza.

I've never had it though so I don't know if its good.. but I'm kinda wanting to eat less cheese (its like the only dairy I eat) so I'm gonna try it.

this is the same for me. im dying to get off the cheese, but man oh man, it's my favorite ever. Like the poster above, i'll eat cheese right off the block. it's amazing. "cheese, cheese the magical fruit."

i know if i stop though, i'll probably shed quite a few pounds i'm looking to give the boot to anyway....which would be lovely!

I tried this rice cheese that is called "Rice" by Galaxy Nutritional Foods. It was Mozzerella flavored and said it would melt. I tried it on my pizza today and what do you know? It melted, and it ended up very close to the consistancy of regular mozzerella cheese and I could even shread it in a cheese grater. And remember this is coming from someone that has eaten blocks of cheese in one sitting. I plan on getting other flavors of these rice cheeses to see if they are as good. I'll let you all know my findings! :)

read those ingredient lists carefully. If there is casien, that's a milk product used to make "cheese" melt and stretch like we are used to!

Checking ingredient list.... Casien. Huh, what do you know, rice cheese has dairy in it! How stupid. So much for that! Sorry to misinform.

  19. That's a bugger, mlo. :( Damn these companies. There are some rice cheeses out there which don't contain anything orrible: for anyone in the UK, Holland & Barrett sell rice cheese slices which are vegan and taste pretty much like ordinary cheese slices. Not everyone likes cheese slices, of course, but I do. :p

Drumminmama: I've often wondered what the purpose was of casein. Thanks for that piece of information. :)

Hey at this point I do what I can. Just starting out, maybe I should leave suggestions to people who are actually vegans in a post labled "Vegan help". I'm not quite there yet.
