    Good morning,

inspired by the fridge thread I want you to tell us your opinions or prejustices against the nationality of the poster above you. If you don't want to reveal your nationality for some reason, please give one you are interested in. You might name positive as well as negative attributes, but no personal affronts, please. I'm the first poster in this thread, so we start with Germans.

    Regards
    Gyro

Germans, so how do you guys feel about the whole unleashing Hitler onto the world.

Germans also always look stern in pictures.

But they're very punctual and make good beer.

Accent is cool on guys, really unsexy on women. But it's ok French works in the same way but opposite.

    Hello,

well, the facts about that time, what happened and how this could happened, blur. The generation that is now 25 years old or younger is appalling ignorant of this topics. That situation has to be changed. But it's not a special situation. The fall of the iron curtain and the break down of the GDR was roughly 20 years ago. But if you ask random people about the political system of the GDR, about life there or what the capital of the GDR was you often hear very entertaining answers, be rarely facts.

On the other hand, the third empire doesn't play a huge role in the everyday life of the people here. IMHO that is a good thing. We are now a few generations after WWII, we are back to normality.

At least we don't spice our beer with obscure igredients ;).

'Kangaroos in Space', the sequel to 'Pigs in Space' ;).

    Hello Dave,

showing nazi symbols like the swastika is illegal in most cases in Germany. Denying the holocaust is illegal, too. But AFAIK that is illegal in a lot of western countries. Except in the USA, where denying the holocaust is covered by your concept of free spech. Any other things I had forgotten?

Well, some time ago some guys designed and sold anti nazi symbols -crossed out swastikas- here in the south. A regional court sentenced them because of showing and glorifying nazi symbols. But our highest court showed some reasoning and found the accused not guilty.

Oh and Germany is full of Turks and Ex-Yugoslavs.

Also, your Frauentausch sucks. It makes German women look like pale fat lesbians....

    Hello,

I have hard times to understand some people from the islands in the north sea or from parts of Bavaria. Is it easy for someone living near the Canadian boarder to follow someone from lets say Texas?

Hey now it's not just our concept of free speech, in fact most countries don't have laws against, America, Canada, Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Italy. Free speech is for everyone, even idiots. Frankly I think Germany should allowed holocaust deniers to state their opinion, so they can be proven to be the idiots they really are.

Though yes, accents are different but basically all people in America and Canada(french speakers excluded) can understand each other fine. Though southern accents still sound freakin terrible.

Though Boston accents are pretty bad too.

    Hello,

interesting. As a non native speaker I think they sound very different. I find discussions with people from different areas of the world a little bit challenging because I need a moment to 'tune in' to the speaker. Italians and people from India are the hardest to understand. Dealing mostly with other non native speakers doesn't do good to my enuncation I guess. I find it interessting how listening comprehension changes over time. In the first years after I left school I find it easier to listen to other Germans, because they make the same errors, use the same strange accents etc. But over time that changed. In most cases I can follow native speakers best. I had listened to a talk this afternoon and it was very hard to follow the ideas of the German speaker because of all this ahh, umm and all this half spoken sentences. I can't do it better so :).

    Regards
    Gyro

    Hello,

I personally haven't made up my mind on this topic. In one way it's just a lie, and lying in general is not illegal. But at the moment I will not vote against that law. I don't know numbers, but my feeling is that there is a consensus that such things should be illegal in Germany. And there are enough things to fix in Germany that are really affecting people. I want Germany to be a free country where people can live without fear of discrimination because of their religion or skin colour or personal opinions etc. People should not have to fear that they are snooped by their own government. And I want not to see holocaust deniers in Germany and there is a way to get rid of them.

    Regards
