so I get change and the girl comes up short $10, no receipt. Eventually, I get her to give me my money. I used to let things like this slide, but I turned her in for it. my attitude now is, there are plenty of honest people who need jobs, showing mercy to thieves just punishes the innocent theoretically, it could have been an honest mistake, but I don't think so. I don't think anyone is going to change my mind, but I'd like to hear what other people think
That's why it was wrong. I mean, I can't even count the number of times I got too MUCH change back... so why couldn't it work the opposite way? And you had gotten your money back. So why would you care? I think if someone wanted to steal from the register they wouldn't even have to do it that way..
I love family dollar. I always come out ahead there., oh she didnt charge me for that, oh she didnt charge me for that. and again. maybe she just likes me. idk..
well, for one thing, she didn't give me a receipt, until I asked for one. I gave her a $50 and 2 $20's, which she rang up as $80. I could see how she might think that I gave her 3 $20's, but I don't think that she would likely have noticed one $50, one $20, and then thought one of the $20's was a $10. Also, she didn't go back and check the register, she just gave me the $10, so I think she knew what she did. Another clearer example is when I got an order from a fast food place for $2.50, I give the girl a five, and she gives me 50 cents change. Then I look at her and she's like "oh, did you give me a five??!!!" No moron, I must have given you a $3 bill I'm probably not going back to that place. Like I said, there's plenty of honest people who need jobs, so if I protect someone who is dishonest, I'm taking a job away from someone else.
Walmart recently gave me $40 of totally free stuff. Price had went over what there was available to pay so we returned (right after buying some of the things) some of the items and ... we had already gotten the full amount back and then they didn't charge us when the partial amnt ($40) was re-scanned. Haha silly
with 20 or so years of retail management experience, I say yes, she knew what she was doing. I have personally caught more than a few cashiers pulling shit, and have also brought suspicious behavior to the attention of other store managers when I have been out shopping. I have no problem with it at all because I have also seen the numbers behind the scene and fully understand that losses from inventory shrink (unaccounted for discrepancies, IE; theft) are DIRECTLY recouped from payroll hours at the store level and higher prices overall at the corporate level. So shoplifting and employee theft directly results in under-staffing at stores and higher prices.
So they "deserve" to be stolen from? Everyone is full of justifications, still doesn't change the nature of the act. oh and thanks for helping to increase retail prices.:2thumbsup:
You're welcome. I said it was recently but I'm not sure why I wrote that as it was a year and half or more ago... Deserve, no... and I don't shoplift from anywhere but I figured if someone is dumb enough to do that that's on them. I just actually really needed that money that day so figured I had good luck. There have been numerous times I've realized that I had gotten short changed from places... so... balanced it out a lil as I never went back when short changed to get my money back either. Shrugs.
Oh I will post a contrasting lil story that happened about a month ago.. We went to Dutch Wonderland (kid's amusement park) and in the gift shop castle my son, in his stroller, was looking at various cars and then we picked one to buy him... went to register, bought it... went back into park... got him outta stroller to change his diaper and noticed he had been sitting on another car from the gift shop. Oops! So, even though I was kinda scared they'd accuse me of stealing it I went back in anyways and gave it back to them and told them what happened. They were like "thanks! happens all the time w kids in strollers"
I wouldn't worry too much about an innocent mistake being punished because generally, managers are smart enough to know an honest mistake from a dishonest thief. A few months back, one of the girls I worked with was working drive-thru and a lady came through and insisted she was shortchanged. The girl taking orders and money was incredibly distraught over it and I myself had witnessed the exchange of money, so I had my employees who weren't busy checking around the inside and outside of the drive-thru window. Generally the rule there is to just take the customer's word for it, give them the money, and punish the employee for not keeping better track of their money, but I could not do that. I was incredibly fast at auditing a drawer after so many years of doing it, so I pulled my cashier's drawer and counted it. The cashier even came back and emptied her pockets and shook her clothes in front of me (by her own decision, I couldn't require anyone to do that). The drawer came up even, and the $50 this woman swore we scammed from her was nowhere to be found. So I took her phone number and told her we still had drawer counts at the end of the day shift and evening shift, so she would be notified if $50 extra showed up. I gave her my name and the manager's name to call back and check the next day as well. She never called back. She played a good game trying to steal that money from us, but I wasn't an idiot and there was no way I was going to let my employee take the fall for a dishonest customer. Don't get me wrong, we had plenty of employees over the year I wouldn't have ever doubted were thieves, but I wasn't going to lose an honest employee over a dishonest customer.
Cashiers used to place the bill given to them on top of the register and then count your change back to you to the penny. I haven't seen that done in a long time.
Hell, I'm surprised if they even know how to count change back properly. Most have to look at the register to tell them how much change to give back. I always have it counted back in my head before the till even opens. I guess it's a throw back to working in the long gone era before bar codes and scanners, but now my age is showing.:blush5:
here is a funny one.. I went into the store with an umbrella that I just closed from the outside rain. I went in and as I was leaning against the counter to point something out to them. a bunch of stuff from the candy counter fell into my umbrella. As I exit the store and open the umbrella, all this shit falls on my head. I picked it up and went inside and told them and the Indian lol and told me to keep it. just a couple candy bars, but still.. i wish it would of been candy I liked.. :sultan:
