I don't like it. It was great fun in the mindless years of being a kid and I'm cool with reasonable giving for kids. Here's the rub though. There isn't one goddam thing I want or need thats within anyone's xmas budget. I don't want funny little gag shit. I'll get my own jeans/tee shirts.

It's embarrassing getting stuff, send a donation to some legit charity, feed/clothe a kid for me, get something useful for a homeless person, rescue a dog BUT you keep it. (Yeah I know that wasn't a sentence.) The point is I have family who don't seem to understand their own language when I say I don't want anything. I really don't want to wrack my brain trying to figure out some meaningful piece of Foo Foo to give someone else either. If it's April and I see you really need a new circualr saw, I'll get you one then. If I know you're really wanting some exotic plant for your garden I'll track it down for fall planting.

Next pair of gift wrapped socks I get may well lead to a felony. Cute gifts that require a battery to make some kind of "funny" noise could result in the giver hearing 911 being punched in on a phone.

We're already the greedyest, shit-junk owning nation on Earth and that damn season of guilt buying is here again. Have any of you got any suggestions on curing people you otherwise love from gift buying. I'm talking something that doesn't involve felonies or rabid fits.

I know I'm not alone in this. You're all a bunch of weird mutants yourselves or you wouldn't be here. Tell me how to deal with this...please

White Elephant gifts can be fun and don't cost anybody anything. If you get something you don't want, take it to a Goodwill store.

It may be a little late for this year but a handmade Christmas is heartfelt and nice.

Greedmas is a corporate construct thinly disguised as a religious holiday with the real purpose of separating the masses from their money.

it is not super meaningful to give the gifts but you seem like a meiser. personally, i believe you should be grateful for what you get. to a lot of people buying others things is a sign of affection, though it may not be to you, to the giver it is and they really do not need to be going out of their way to purchase you anything. be happy with what you have, some people don't get shit from anyone.. cry baby

Guess I didn't make this completly clear. I give gifts and receive them year round. I am far from a miser. It's the artifical construct of guilt buying at xmas and the measuring of the economy by how much money the merchant can pry away from the masses. That NOT about a freely given gift. its a form of coersion.
Ask some of the occupy people about their feelings of being herded into buying at xmas. You wanna give me a gift, feed a hungry kid. You wanna clothe me, send it to the homeless. I don't want any more stuff...I want something with meaning.

I really resent how, as stinkfoot refered to, xmas has been owned by the merchant class. Lost its meaning in the marketing of cheap-ass gimmics to peddle. Walmart started xmas muzac on Nov. 1st. Hohoho my happy ass.
My thoughts here are to open peoples thoughts to gving meaningfully and not just during selling season. I do appreciate that I may not be making myself clear but think about what you really need. And why you feel compelled to give gifts during the "season".

i only really get gifts from my mom, and i'm not going to take that joy away from her. i'm pretty sure she likes giving me presents more than i like receiving them.

I have no problem giving or getting things, at the solstice or any other time of year.

It is what you make of it. This year I'm telling anyone who asks that I need waffle pattern knit long johns. You can never have too many long johns, and right now I have none left :2thumbsup:
