i am trying to germinate my weed seeds so ive been researching it a bit on the net. i found a method that i liked, soaking the seeds in water until they start to sprout. i have put 5 seeds in a cup of water and put it in a warm dark place. has anyone tried this before, does it work?

another thing, is it alright to put my seedlings outside in the shade when they are still small?

    any help will be appreciated.

I know that some people soak thier seeds in water for several hours, as a first step in germinating. But they don't leave them in the water - or do they? Seems like the poor little things would drown! I must admit that I still use the ever popular "Paper Towel Method" (if it works - don't fix it!), so this is a new one on me! Hydroponic (DWC) germination? Let's see what others have to say.

Yeah, you can put your sprouts right outside (they are remarkabally tough little suckers!) - as long as the frost danger has passed for your area. On the second day outside, give them an hour or two in direct sun light - and increase that by one hour every day or two, untill you reach full daylight hours. Good luck!

Germination is just the first step - you have a long journey ahead. Search, search, search! Read, read, read! Study, study, study!

If leaving seeds (fully emerged) in water to germinate is a popular technique - I'd like to hear about it!!! I've been doing the paper towel "thing" for so long I just never looked into any other method - maybe it's time for a change!

i am now using the "paper towel method". i have put the seeds in a moist paper towel and folded it over itself so the seeds are completely covered. i completely covered it all so no light can get it. how long does this precess ussually take?

i live in Australia so growing outdoors is actually possibly ALL year-round. i have made a patch in the forest to put my plants in, but it is not FULLY exposed to sunlight ALL day because of the big paper-bark trees around it. the forest is VERY thin thou, so the light will still get in. will this affect my plants?

i am totally new to growing weed, i "borrowed" some seeds off my dad(who grows indoor dope) and am pretty sure that they are sativa strands.
what is the chance of a seed germitating if i put it STRAIGHT into a pot?

Complete darkness isn't neccesary - I usually do it on a countertop in the kitchen without any "lightblocking material" - just avoid intense light. Most of the seeds usually start to show the white taproot within two days to a week - the condition of the seeds and the temperature has a lot to do with how long it takes. A low powered heating pad, placed underneath, will speed things up (though I don't use one).
This is how I do it. Using any suitable, small, container with a flat bottom (I usually use a small "breadplate" - it's like a saucer, but without the "cup-ring" in the bottom). I "loosely" fold up a paper towel (don't squash it flat) to about 1/2 playing card size. This forms a nice thick "matress". Place the "matress" in the container and add just enough water to saturate the paper plus "just a little bit" more. Arrange the seeds on top of the "matress" (not too close together) and cover them up with a single layer of moist paper towel. There should always be a little extra water (a few drops - to a spoonful or so) around the bottom of the "matress" - if not add some. Never let the paper towels and seeds dry out!!! If you have to add water more than once a day (low humidity) you may want to add a plastic film cover to control evaperation. Remove the plastic film (if you're using one) and the single layer of paper towel to check the seeds at least twice a day - for water and germination. As soon as the white taproot shows; the seed is ready to plant. Always use water that is ph neutral.

"i live in Australia so growing outdoors is actually possibly ALL year-round."
I've always been curious about that! Do most strains go into "autoflowering mode" close to the Equator - or do you still have to wait for equal periods of day and night to go into flowering?

As long as they get a few hours of direct sun and the rest of the day is "thinly shaded" they should be alright. If the vegetation is sparse; you will probably need to improve the soil in your patch.

Chances are good! Just don't go too deep - about 1/4-1/2 an inch. That's what - like 6-12mm? The same rule applies - the seed wants to stay moist untill it sprouts. Gooday! and good luck!

Ive used the seeds in water so far for about 15 seeds spread on 3 occasions. First 2 times worked fine and germinated in few days. This time it took 12 days for half of them to germinate, almost gave up on them. Generally leaving them in water untill they germinate works fine though. I suppose any method would work anyways.

I have a waterbed that is heated, would it be wise for me to use the papertowel method and place the papertowel underneath the sheets?

I would think that the weight of the water/Bag would crush any sprout. I wouldn't suggest it.

I guess you could depending on the temps and what you have them in. Top of the fridge, tv, vcr or nothing. Its the warmth (not heat) that helps encourage them - like the sun warming the earth they were planted in :)
