Atheists and Christians need to get along. Seriously this is bullshit. I made a thread back in April and it's still going on. Given enough interested people, that thread will never end. This WAR will never end. There will always be believers and non-believers.

I mean holy shit, I come back here in October and my thread is still going on, and here's what the last 20 pages looked like:

Holy crap it will go on forever.

Learn to be tolorant and not be such dicks to people who believe something different than you. Stop posting pointless trash. Leave that to people like Richard Dawkins and whoever decides to debate him.

because athiesm isn't so much a system of beliefs as a reaction to a system of beliefs. it isn't self supporting, it needs a god, or atleast an idea of a god, to not believe in.

Exactly, religion can not be ignored or tolerated any more than AIDS. Religion is a deadly disease! The "religious right" will always lead you down the wrong path. The religious vote has nearly destroyed America. When the majority finally realize that religion is a sickness there will be no more "freedom of religion", there will be freedom FROM religion. There will not even be any hope of peace until this day comes.

 

I can accept the fact that the God Atheists do not believe in does not exist, but Atheists should consider the idea that non-Atheists may be talking about something entirely different than the non-existent, non-object of their Atheistic disbelief.

To put it more simply, the only thing common to both the Atheist's God and the Non-Atheist's God, is the name.

When speaking about God, Atheists and Non-Atheists are rarely, if ever, engaged in the same conversation.

It's kind of like a Doctor and a Mystic talking about Consciousness, or a Rabbi and a Guitarist talking about Inspiration, or a Biologist and a Biographer talking about Life.

The lack of a belief doesn't require the belief to exist. What you are refering to is an antithiest.

 

In his book Atheism: A Very Short Introduction, Julian Baggini makes a good case that atheism is usually another name for naturalism, and that instead of just being negative and against god, it's really a positive belief system favoring naturalistic explanations. I think a similar case could be made that other forms of atheism are essentially humanist. As I understand it, the American Humanists are trying to provide atheists the "benefits" of organized religion.

You believe religion is bad because believers commit acts of ignorance, oppression and violence. This is a problem. Humans were wrestling with ignorance, oppression and violence before we were even human. But, rather than address the issue of ignorance, oppression and violence, you blame all organized intentions (however unsuccessful) to enlighten, liberate and make peace.

Let's play with your analogy. According to your logic: If A is bad, and A and B co-exist, therefore, B is bad. Your solution? Get rid of B and A will cease to exist.

According to your logic: AIDS is a medical condition that kills people, it is bad. Medicine has not eradicated AIDS, therefore, medicine is complicit (this is exactly the same fallacy as the relationship between religion and ignorance, oppression and violence). Abolish medical science and AIDS will just go away.

Let me guess, you've never studied medicine, or religion, or . . . logic.
