that myth is bullshit, how does cutting your hair make it grow??? where is the logic, its bollox hair dressers make up to get more work, and its also counter productive, how is cutting your hair gonna help you gain length??

I guess is because if the tips are open or damaged the hair grows slower because its trying to repair itself, so if you cut the damaged part (or tips) the hair grows faster but only until the tips open again. That's what I understood when someone explained it to me, I used to cut 1 cm every 2-3 months and it helped with the growing.
But I'm not so sure that would work with dreaded hair

hair is dead once it pentrates your scalp, the folicle (sp?) is the only living part and it is not visible (it's under your scalp)

the idea of it repairing itself or growing faster when cut is untrue

you trim the ends to remove split ends which i don't see as necessary with dreads

Don't know about the ends stuff, but brushing your hair is said to help stimulate the growth?

I brush my hair every day, generally, mostly the scalp area though. I don’t know if that helps hair grow faster, but it sure helps keeping a clean, lively feeling scalp. I never brushed the last time I had a lock-mop, but I wish I had.

Um, guess it does depend how developed one’s locks are, don’t think peeps with locks starting out would want to try brushing … but anyway, I find a small nail-brush, like this one, works the best:

I agree with jason, it's a load of bollocks and hairdressers say it to get more work. It's simple common sense that hair grows from the root and is dead once it pops outta the surface. The root has no concern at all with the tip!!

But, it may seem that dreads grow slower than normal hair because the new growth shrinks the same as it did at the beginning.

You don't trim the ends to help it grow you trim the ends to make what's already grown more healthy. Split ends can frizz or be straw like or even break off.

really have ya'll never had long hair? it looks like shit if you don't trim it often, at least mine always does. it will get a ton of split ends and especially dead ends, weigh down, look drabby until i snip off the oldest bits and then its bouncy and beautiful once again. i just trimmed my dreads the other day but it was more out of boredom and honestly my hair is still mostly undreaded anyway so i guess i can't say 'dreads'.

Fine appear healthy. And some people don't care for frizz in their loose hair. *shrug* That's between them and their hair.

Once my locs get shoulder length I'll most likely trim them to keep them there. Longer hair can be heavy and with where I live long hair can be hard to wear down and stay cool.
