i know a lot of people do the tongue splitting, creating a forked tongue. that's now really what i'm looking for, and i don't know if anyone ever does what it is i'm interested in, but i was hoping someone who's familiar with tongue splitting might know some information that would help me.

i want to cut the frenulum (the webbing underneath my tongue) back a little bit. mine attaches my tongue pretty tightly (not enough to be considered a tongue tie, but i can't extend my tongue fully out of my mouth), and i would like a little more mobility.

do people ever slice this small piece of tissue? i've played with it a bit, and it doesn't seem to have any muscular attachment, and i don't see any major veins or arteries that would cause problems. don't some people pierce this piece of skin? my common sense tells me if you can pierce it you can cut it, but i just wanted to get some other people's opinions before i ask a piercer/body modification expert and get my ass laughed at.

    anything can go wrong sometimes.

i'm hoping someone who'se in the body modification business can tell me what kinds of risks i would be looking at.

to expand on the situation... this frenulum often hurts me, because it restricts my tongue movement, and so it's like a continual sore spot in my mouth. i'm sick of it, and just want my tongue to feel "right." if that makes any sense.

No, I've heard of this. It's been done before. Look into it some more, I don't think there's any reason why you couldn't get it done.

    Frenulectomy.

My dentists and doctors all told my mother I needed one [I have TERRIBLE ankyloglossia, I can't even get my tongue out past my lip] but she was like, "OMGZ NO SHE'LL PUT A RING IN IT". She still refused to let me, even after they said I was extremely lucky I didn't develop a speech impediment.

    My mum's a retard sometimes.

But yeah, I definitely want to get it done. It's an oral surgery thing, though. You gotta talk to your dentist and get a referral to an oral surgeon.

so apparently some piercers will do it. i'm sure i could find one... but it's starting to tear on its own, and i figure cutting it has to be better than tearing, right? i'm thinking of doing this myself

maybe i'll just do a piercing, heal it, stretch it, and then cut what little is left. seems to me that would help with the regrowth problem.

i'm poor as shit. not going to an oral surgeon, that's for damn sure.

this is something i'm gonna do myself, so i wanna make sure i do it right, and don't fuck up my tongue. my tongue be precious!!!

i might consider going to a piercer if i can find one who'll do it.

dude. it seems as though doctors just clip it with a scissors and let it heal on its own. which sounds barbaric, next to what piercers do (clamping, cutting with a scalpel, etc.).

so maybe it's not as big a deal as they make it out to be. maybe i'll just take a pair of wicked sharp scissors to it. it can't hurt much worse than what's going on right now with it tearing on its own.

I would be absolutely terrified to do that myself.

I wouldn't even trust a piercer to do it. Most piercers around here [especially ones that are members of the APP] won't do anything that can be construed as oral surgery, for liability's sake.

one of my friends had that little piece of skin there that was keeping her tongue from being able to move or whatever cut a little by her dentist, if you're talking about what i think you're talking about.

    ask yours.

yeah... don't have a dentist, haven't in years. i don't have any insurance or any money.

i've watched several frenectomy procedures done with a laser on youtube. it looks simple as hell. the only thing that would be different if i did it myself would be that i would bleed a hell of a lot more, which i can deal with. i used to help doctors do procedures much more involved than this, so i'm not so worried about the actuality of doing it. i'm just trying to figure out HOW i want to do it.

i think i'm first going to try just stretching it. if i stretch it regularly it might loosen up a bit on its own, and the tear that's starting may tear more, which i can heal. if it doesn't work that way, i'll probably just pierce it, stretch it, and help it migrate out so i can split the frenulum that way. sounds a lot less painful that way, huh? definitely less blood. :)

from what ive read about on a couple medical sites its not too hard of a procedure to do yourself as you said though it will bleed a lot there are a lot of viens that will bleed a lot. your idea about stretching it out a bunch first and then just cutting it will work pretty good. i wouldnt use scissors though most art and crafts placs carry pen knifes(exacto knifes i think theyre called) which would be a much better idea for you to use because they are much sharper and will probably come out with a clean cut unlike with scissors which will be jagged.

    good luck!

lol... i worked in the medical profession for several years... i would certainly use appropriate tools. a scalpel or surgeons scissors, for sure.
