Let me make one thing perfectly clear. Hippies ARE A DISASTER. Who the hell do you think you are? It's 2005. The hippy movement died at Altamont in December 1969.. Get a career will ya?

Umphrey's McGee could care less about being the next Phish or Dead. They are a progressive rock band that somehow got lumped into the jamband world because they improvise I guess. Just because UM fans have degrees, jobs, and tuck their shirts in doesn't mean we are any less devoted to great music than anyone else. If you want grilled cheese, artsy fartsy lite hippy dippy hula hoop shit, go listen to SCI or "the Dead." Are the wittle bitty notes too compwicated for wou? This is fusion, metal, and progressive rock, NOT hippie music. PAY ATTENTION you slimy w00ks.

UM is getting international press outside of the US in progressive rock and fusion circles, and it's been very positive. The last thing we need are stinky hippies that simply know NOTHING about music outside of the jamband world. We win. You lose. The numbers speak for themselves.

I enjoy their music quite a bit for what they do, not who follows them etc. But my above question is food for thought

Yes they certainly do throw down. I enjoy them a lot. I'd also guess that they really don't care what type of person goes to their shows. Well, accept for the homer with the bad attitude who started the thread.

I've got a degree, have short hair, wear a suit to work, etc - I go see the Dead, Umphrey's, STS9, - hell just about any act out there today when they come to town. Assembly of Dust is playing tonight and that's where I'll be. My point is, that I don't care who is at the shows and I'm sure the band would say the same thing.

lots of "hippies" go out to UM shows, so your just gonna have to accept people you dont like. i'm guessing that if you spend your time worrying about the crowd and not the band then you really shouldn't belong at a show. If Umphrey's were anti-hippy, then why would they play at fests and such like "Hippy Hill Hoodang"? I'm guessing that UM like all their fans, regardless of the label you put on them. get a life dude

i always thought that fusion, prog rock, and metal all evolved (devolved) from hippie music. and as far as witty bitty notes, its not hard to repeat an arpeggio and change modes eachtime, especially if your plugged in.
