Okay, I think I may have a problem. I've been keeping up with dread maintainence and root separation pretty well so far. This week has been spring break, so I washed my hair on Saturday and haven't messed with it since. I usually wear my hair in a ponytail and let it down when I get home...but this week I've just kept it back in a bun, even slept with it in a bun. Didn't take it down or shake it out or anything...just redid the bun. It's been 4 days since I've really messed with my hair. So I took it down a little bit ago and felt around...I think I may have a serious problem in the back. A large section, maybe 12 dreads(think like the bald spot on a monk), has decided to join. About an inch to 2 inches from the roots up. I tried pulling them apart, but they're not having any of it. I even snipped a tiny little connector strand...and that freaked me out so I haven't messed with the scissors anymore (I know..but I was desperate!)... Part of me is silly enough to be kind of happy that my hair's dreaded so tightly in just a few days (grrr). The larger, more sensible part of me is freaked out. I do NOT want a strange, huge uni-dread sticking out of the back of my head. And I really don't want to start over. How do I get these buggers apart?
Have you tried washing them again with Dr Bronners so there all slippery and then just tearing them apart?
this is how i separate my knots: i wash and towel dry, then i sit my ass on the couch and separate each dread from the root down it's really quite easy with damp hair but the key is separating from the root down. just find a good place and wiggle your fingers around in there and pull and wiggle, pull and wiggle.
yeah, it's easiest to rip and seperate when they are wet. That is when I do my seperating, after showers. Speaking of, I'm going to go wash my hair right now!
dont tie them up when theyre wet dont sleep with em in a bun.. but u should get em apart just yea work on em ewhen wet & u might have a lil job ahead of u..
hey man I wish my hair would do that, I love big ass congos! My buddy Doc has this one gigantic congo like 4-5" wide going down his back, I love it!
dudenamedrob...but...I'm a girl! And while I love the certain special flair dreads give women like myself, I don't want to be a big ass congo kinda girl. Hehe, and I'm glad that my hair likes to dread (esp. since it's stick straight and super silky) anyway. soaringeagle; I'd never never never ever go to bed or put my hair up wet. I'm a germaphobe and mold is my worst fear. Okay, bugs are my worst fear, but mold and mildew are a close second. But now I know...sleep with my hair down. NOT up. I ran out of Dr. Bronners last night (Use it as body wash, face scrub, ect.), and Herbs-N-Oils was closed when I was in town...I'll get some tomorrow. Thanks for the hope! I was freaking out a little.
