I'm about 6 months into the dreading process. I started mine from backcombing and such, and that's not why I'm unhappy at the current moment.

I seperated my hair into 1" segments, but now that my hair is tight and dready my thickest dread is a quarter inch thick. I want at least 1" thick dreads, so I was thinking of combing out maybe 3 a day, then rebackcombing and starting that section all over again, and keep doing that til my entire head is done again to ensure I get the thickness I want.

Should I do that, or should I try combining dreads? If combining, what is the best method and how long would it take? Please don't suggest going natural, I'm 100% sure that I don't want to take that route.

    Here are some comparison photos:

These were at 2 months, nice and thick and that's almost the size I wanted them

And here they are now, about half as thick.

don't start them again hun, they look so beautiful. they're still pretty young so some may thicken up. Mine changed soooo much in a year it's not funny. I now have thick ones and thin ones and I love them all. If you still want to combine I'm pretty sure I saw instructions on a vid on utube.

    good luck

    xx

And if they don't get thicker you can also just put some together by putting a bead on 2 or 3 locks, they'll grow together in time then.

^ Yes, or maybe hemp-wrap a few of the skinnier ones together. Don't start over - they're lovely! Mine are only a year old (second set) and I swear, they're still shrinking up and getting fatter... Stick with it - they'll thicken up!

    You're so pretty, Villi!

ooo I was just thinking the same thing about mine 2 days ago, some are really tiny. I didnt wanna undo any, as they are all the same age. Sooo I bleached 6 small ones, then I just kinda twisted and rolled them into another next to it. [IMG]

They're smalller because of them getting tighter. They will definately get fatter and combine into some awesome congo's. Do whatever makes you happy, but 6 months in is a great accomplishment. Throw a couple beads up there, combine some dreads and you should be happier in no time. Cheers

it happened to my dreads as well. there is nothing bad happening to dreads, really. i think that if you would do them over, the same thing would happen.

    Aww thank you Mamabear!

I feel a lot more confident after your guys' advice. I'll grab some more beads and pop em onto some of the ones I wanna combine.

Thanks to all your guys' input.

They look great to me, I'm glad you decided not to start over. At 6 months I imagine it would be a NIGHTMARE trying to comb it out.
Would probably end up losing most of your hair in the process. Maybe the 1st six months they shrink as they tighten up, then the next six months they spend thickening up.

I was thinking the same thing about combing them out, but I have a friend who had hers for about a year and a half, pretty big and thick too, and she did hers halfway and still had an awesome head of hair.

well i guess i can't help ya out on this one, because the only thing I support is going natural. But just do whatever you feel like....
