...But there's a delema(sp?) I would like to get them done at a salon or something like that to get rid of the risk of screwing it all up, but I don't want a perm. I hear perms screw up your hair. Plus it's as expensive as hell. My friend wants dreads too, so I was thinking we could just spend some days doing each others. I only want the back comb method, really.

Do you guys/gals think that my friend and I should just do each other's hair, or should we spend some money to get it done somewhere else? I'm just really scared of us screwing each other's hair up (I don't trust him a ton to do a good job).

If you know of any stores searcher and you could help me my zip code is 54016.
If for some reason you'd like to know, I am 18 and my hair is aroun 5- 5 1/2" long.

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

You'd have to TRY to screw up backcombing.

Don't spend a dime on 'getting it done'

going to a salon is the surest way to screwthem up
for every 1 that might do an ok job, theres probly 60 that would totaly fuck you up
salons do not make dreads, they make ugly messesthat can pass for dreads if its dark enough..and every one of them will try to get you back in every 2 weels for dread mantainance..which means caking on morewax
either have your freind help u or just bepatient & let them happen
if you spend $ on them your defeatting the whole purpose. & you'll be miserable with the results.

Just do it yourself. if you screw up they are probably too loose and you can always comb them out. If you want likie 30 or 80 or whatever, make sections first, if you don't care, just pick some hair and start backcombing. If you want them tight comb a little and then twist and rip 2 or 3 times, then comb twist and rip etc. till the end.

i'm confused. you're profile says 26.. your first post says 15.. your last post says 18... you dont seem to know your own age......

anyway, friends can *usually* handle backcombing. just make sure that you both look into how to do it.
and just so you know, the salons do them without perming them too. they just recommend perming. ... and the one i had gone to (my first set, not this set) was upfront about the big "wax or no wax" debate so its not like they force you to do it the "wrong way". they just are people who happen to get money for doing something your friend could do for free. ... they had said to come back every 3 to 6 months for a deep cleaning. but i dont do that since i know enough about my hair to keep it clean.

Sorry about that, I've been out of it lately after doing a little bit of "experimenting". I ordered my starter kit yester day and it should be here Thursday or Friday. One last question: I ordered a couple peyote-stitch sleeves along with it, and I was wondering how long I should wait until I cant put them in or can I start wearing them immediately? Thankks for the advice! If my stuff gets here Thurs. or Fri., then I will do this hopefully on sunday.

you can put em on right away. if your starter kit comes with wax, throw it away. you don't need it. and i would suggest not washing for the first week or so. rubberbands are optional, but i suggest beads instead. rubberbands can get stuck in your hair...forever.

Are you sure I don't need wax? Any one else agree with that? Cuz I have somewhat straight hair (caucasian, not african american) And I have a hard time believing that it won't become a frizzy mess. I personally don't like it when white guys put beads in their hair (makes them look like a wannabe ghetto) And I have had some incredibly painful memories with rubber in my hair. I also read that putting stuff on the ends of your dreads doesn't help because it constricts your hair, making it hard for it to grow and knot up. BTW, I am getting most of my info from knotty boy and their FAQs. I will go read up on their info again to make sure that I have my facts straight.

EDIT: Heres the link to things about rubberbands: http://www.knottyboy.com/lore/idx.php/12/072/Before-You-Dread/article/Is-it-a-good-idea-to-use-elastics-or-rubber-bands-on-my-dread-tips-and-roots-to-keep-them-more-together.html But it says nothing about beads and that stuff, so I'll admit that I read wrong, but w/e. (*trying to think of something to type*)

you dont need wax. i have thin blond hair and didnt use it.
knottyboy says you do so you will.. guess what? give them money.

rubber bands are awful, in my opinion.

beads and wraps are good though. (but i grew up in a ghetto and have little memory of anyone having beads in their hair there haha)

i have the same type of hair too,, i didnt use wax... everyone here will tell you not to, we have seen some yucky things... it actually stops your hair from knotting and thats what we want. also water stays attached to wax, and thus mold. no body wants moldy hair

what they all said. my buddy used wax because he has straight hair. with wax is hair is knotting up very slowly and it's a HUGE task for him to always be rolling and rolling and rolling his hair. 2 months and he's still got chunks of wax in his hair that are stubborn and won't come out. It sucks and he's not too happy with it. Don't use wax, in the end it doesn't help all that much and oftentimes, hinders the process. My dreads have never had wax in them and they are doing awesome so far. listen to the people here, they know what's up.

ok thanks for that inout you guys! But how does your hair stay together in dreads? I saw a demo of how to make dreads and right after she back combed the guys hair, it was a huge frizzy thingy. Would I need beads to keep them together? If so, I'd need to go get more supplies. Do you think my hair will turn out ok if I use the wax ONCE until some more sleeves come in the mail? or are there any other alternatives to holding my hair together that look nice. I want my dreads to look presentable as fast as possible. I mentioned to some people at school that I'm getting dreads and now everyone is waiting for me to make my dreads. No one in my school has done anyting like that yet. also, will my friend's hair group together fine even though his hair is only 3 inches? or will he need beads and such? My mom is bein a bitch about beads saying stuff like "so long as you live in this house, you can't wear beads", so some cool alternatives, like a link to a site where I can buy alot of sleeves cheap would be great. Thank you again for how helpfull you guys have been!

if you want cheep sleeves, cut up a t-shirt into strips and sew them to make sleeves

alright then, sweet! sounds like a nice way to help out my hair while improving the looks at little or no cost to me. Now to get creative....

EDIT: So, just to get a positive answer, is my friend's hair long enough for a back comb? Or is 3 inches way too short? I'm guessing if he does do backcombing he'll need beads or sleeves in his hair, right?

backcombing 3 inches of hair probably won't work. at that length, not brushing is probably the best way to get them to knot up. they'll just stick straight up and all fall out if you backcomb.
