Conservative Americans are quick to shout their brainwashed Mantra that "America is the Greatest Country". They spout this line like the parrots they are, without even thinking or comparing the US to other countries on any criteria other than wealthiest. Like that is all that counts, all that makes a country "great". Of course the vast majority of these mindless idiots say such rubbish because they've never BEEN anywhere else. They have no experience of how people in other countries live, so they just drag out another tired meaningless cliche when they can't provide any proof of such claims. So to illustrate how America FAILS to be the Greatest country, I'm starting a list here of things that America would do or would have if indeed it was better than other countries... Feel free to add your own thoughts to this list! America would be great if... 1. It provided FREE healthcare for every man, woman and child. Hell just covering those who DON'T have any (like about 35% of Americans) would at least bring it in line with most other industrialized nations in the world! This would include low cost prescription medicine, like much of the world has. In the USA, most medicines cost 8 to 10xs more than in countries like Spain. 2. It had a Low Infant Mortality. Related to #1 is the recently revealed fact that the US has the second WORSE infant survival rate in the developed world! 3. It made peace instead of war with countries it disagrees with. Rather than exhausting all diplomatic options, the US prefers to go to war, thus making the US an enemy of millions if not billions of people, enriching arms manufacturers and favored contractors at the expense of thousands of innocent lives. What ever happened to the Xtian concept of "loving your enemies"? 4. It wasn't full of racists. Many like to pretend that racism is a thing of the past in the US, but just look at all the racists coming out of the woodwork over the Immigration issue. 5. There was a true separation of church and state. Instead we get told that the US is a Xtian country with Xtian values. The "born again" president talks to God who TELLS him what to do! Why listen to Congress or the American public when GOD is your boss? 6. It was a tolerant country. There is so much intolerance in America towards muslims, gays, promiscuity, soft-drug use and those who don't hold Xtian values. 7. It had a multiparty political system where everyone would feel represented. The entrenched two-party system has done a great disservice to all Americans by not providing alternative platforms on a wide range of issues. The proof of the system's failure is the low turnout in most elections where the winner is elected by a minority of eligible voters. So many, probably over 45%, are alienated by a political system that offers them no representation and so don't participate at all! 8. It stopped persecuting people for victimless crimes like smoking marijuana. The War on Drugs alone has cost this country HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars with virtually nothing to show for it, except thousands of broken families, overcrowded jails filled with drug offenders and criminalizing people who are otherwise productive, law abiding citizens. 9. It was a world leader, instead of the world's laggard on environmental issues. By failing to address the US dependence upon foreign oil, we have played recklessly with our own security, and played into the hands of those who would do us harm. We have ignored and negated our own environmental laws so that big business can make more profits. We should be setting an example for the rest of the world of ecological sustainability and alternative energy sources. Instead we continue to exploit the limited resources of other countries, while our country's wealth flows overseas. 10. It stood by its International commitments and treaties instead of finding excuses to ignore them so they could abuse human rights around world with impunity. We have shown the world our true colors by endorsing torture and renditions. By starting wars on flimsy evidence for greedy reasons the US had lost the MORAL high ground and respect of most of the world. Please add your own...
if people consentrated there voting efforts localy, because the mayor of today is the president of tommarrow if there where severe restictions on campain contributions and the politians where forced to show where there money comes from in there national adds how about a anti lobby campian contributtion group for politians who do not wish to be indebted to big buisness if only hippys and those who identfy with them are allowed to vote,, j/k on that last one, dont freak
hippies are not allowed to vote, and that is no joke. The vote is disenfranchised for marijuana felons, and it is state to state what is considered a felony. In some states you can get the vote back, and in some states you can't. Even in states that you can, you have to work at it, by applying to the gov for instance. That is the whole reason that GW is pres now. Because of the disenfranchisment of the marijuana (leftist) vote. By the way the usa is the only industrialise democracy that disinfranchises the vote.
my attempt to summerize in a few words as i also feel: america would be a pretty darn good country if it would ever stop romantacizing aggressiveness, worshipping the automobile, and trying to tell everyone else how to live. if it were truely great, there would be no need to compare itself to others. let alone make war on them, on the excuse of speculation that they MIGHT possess what itself refuses to give up! i wish i lived in a country who'se core values did not create a market for what america's present regeme represents. i wish i could have been born and grown up in such a country, and never have heard of such a place as the america in which i actualy did and through no choice of my own still do. =^^= .../\...
Instead of using it is surplus wealth and power to create wars in-order to maintain the status quo of elites and the very wealthy and powerful it should create peace and paradise on earth. Instead of giving the army massive and unquestioned funds it should give such funds to science, technology, progress, infrastructure, and education. Instead of outcasting progressive elements in society it should advocate them. Instead of destroying it should build. Instead of supporting deception it should advocate truth. Instead of supporting oppression and exploitation directly or indirectly it should advocate liberation. Instead of supporting profits over humanity and the environment it should support humanity and the environment over profits. Instead of supporting fraudulent democracy it should advocate true democracy. Instead of accepting poverty, inequalities, and iniquities it should advocate against such ills. Instead of making life hard it should make it livable.
Um. Not all hippies smoke pot and not all hippies get a record for smoking pot. Hippies CAN vote. FELONS cannot vote in many states. Perhaps you need to stop getting caught.
sir cynical, I am a great guy and a hard worker. I am a political activist who specializes in voting rights and free speach. I am almost 50 years old, and my right to vote was disenfranchised for over 20 years and it was not even my pot. You are missing the point. The point is that only in america do they disenfranchise the vote. In so doing they disenfranchise a disproportionate number of the poor and the left. Because of this democracy does not work. You have no idea what you are talking about. To ban a child of 18 from ever being a school teacher, a fireman, a general contractor, or many other things, and to take his right to vote away, is a punishment disproportionate to the crime. That is the reason that they don't do it anywhere else. But thank you for providing this platform for me to show how smart i am. Perhaps some day we will get to sweat together and you will see how manly i am also.
I agree with almost everything that Skip said in the original post, except for the business about the President being a "Christian". Everything that Bush and his buddies do is totally antithetical to Christianity, and is done solely for political purposes. America would be the greatest country on earth if the people that lived here quit prancing around and saying that it is! When citizens of a country do that, they cease to have humility (which, by the way, is essential to any kind of real Christianity) and can no longer see their own faults or the faults of the country at large.
Nationalise what those before us have formed, in order to call ourselves an enlightened , lawfull and civilized society--one in which adjudications are equal throughout----THE LAW.Also use some of the closed military bases as locations to provide any and all drugs to whoever wants them.Hell, put the money needed to do this right in the budget.Get rid of the phony "war on drugs" program that costs we ,the taxpayers, billions and billions. We humans have attempted to change conscienceness and merge with, or at least observe the mysterious throughout our history (not to mention have some fun along the way)so obviously this"war" is just another program to further bleed the shit out us and create more law enforcement jobs.I don't give a shit if people want to shoot wood alchohol in their eyeballs--it's none of my business--but it's my business if they crawl thru my window to get some of my stuff to enable themselves to get high.I agree with Skip and others also reriginal points.
you know i don't care about being the greatest. comparing anything to do with ones self with anyone or anything else is just plain pointless. what i do care about is the kind of world i have to live in. and i have to live in the same world everyone else does. and everyone else does too. whatever some might immagine, because they feather their nest more cushily then others, to the contrary. because no matter how feathered any one can make their own nest, they have to venture out of it some time. and when the do, it is through the same world as the rest of us. there are no tecnological barriers to creating universal abundance. nor to doing so in sustainable harmony with nature's cycles of renewal on which all living organisms including those of our own speciecies completely and ultimately depend. there haven't been for at least 30 years that i know of. and even with the tecnologies we had 50 years ago it might have been possible. the barrier is in our core values, in the priorities we live by and take for granted living by. and it ought to be obvious i don't mean those considered to be extreme either. no america is how it is because of how people look at things. and a lot of that comes from what we entertain ourselves with. the examples depicted in the storries, in what we think denotes a describing of reality and what doesn't. it is not the persuit of gratification that i am calling into question but the way we convince each other what to expect gratification is and isn't. i think that's at the very core. that and what we expect to be expected of us. these are what define a culture and its values. perspective and where perspective comes from. coyote used to teach children by his example all the pitfalls of expectation. children who were not deceived about sex and didn't become warped by having been. and not just about sex either. yes america, like any country, could be a pretty darn good one if only if, and maybe, someday, when it no longer is america, or the america it is today, it will be. =^^= .../\...
