    Hi there
I have read the teaching's of Don Juan and the next one-A seperate reality and I think they are classics, there are 4 more which follow on the story but sadly I have not come across them as yet. here is what is written on the first page of The Teaching's of Don Juan by Carlos casteneda:

Carlos Casteneda was a graduate student in anthropology at U.C.L.A., gathering information on various medicinal Herbs used by the Indians in Sonora, Mexico, when he met the old Yaqui Indian, Don Juan. The Teachings of Don Juan is the story of the first five years these two men spent together as master and pupil.

So make your own mind up!!!

I read one of his books and started to research him. I guess back in the day he treid to get in with Tim Leary on the acid tests and things like that he was turned away though. His book was great at least the one I read but I coulndt help thinking that it was strange all the facts he remembered, and that Don Juan would answer him with such modern terms or phrases. He had lots of followers though basically a whole religion on his teachings. The book was written really well though.

there is debate on the truthfullness of the story. I say even if it was fabricated in his mind it was still full of truth, and a great read!

It's true in the sense that he really did have those experiences.

Who can know if it "really" happened, or if it was a drug-induced delusion?

The point is that drugs open doors to different realities. If you experience it as true, then in that place at that time, for you, it is "really" happening. I've had some experiences myself that I *know* happened for real, even though they were way out of this world.

Same with dreams. Ever had a dream that you know was more than a dream, because it was so real? My theory is that all dreams are real - while we are asleep our psychic/astral body (consciousness) leaves our physical body and goes adventuring in different dimensions, as real as this one. Drugs are just one way to do this while you're awake. Meditation is another.

I actually recieved those 3 books at christmas last year, and they are fantastic. I am planning on reading them again this summer. They are rather psychadelic, and anthropological- hence, they incorporate 2 of my very favorite things.

    Read and enjoy!

I've read almost all of his books, and you do want to read them in order. Otherwise it will definitely not make sense. Very cool stuff! Enjoy!

anyone read the Carlos Castenada series?

i have been digesting these books for almost 2 years. i read one..slowly. then i take time to try and understand, and get a feel for these insights, then i read another. right now i am on the Power of silence; just started. i am fascinated by the way you can invision these hard to illitrate ideas.

if you are into shaminsm, or mind expansion, there was also a book writen on the same lines by a woman named Tasha sumpin, and it is called 'a womans journey'. it is a take on the same type of ideas, through a womans experiences. being a woman, i found that i couls relate to this alot, and i am still finding myself thinking over the ideas, and actions expressed in this book.

They're alright. I feel that the effect wears off after a while. Much like The Alchemist and the Celestine Prophecy.

I figure those are passive activities no matter how you see it you need to actually go out there and test the water yourself.

i really enjoyed and was inspired by casteneda's books...i've read a bunch. but then, intrigued, i decided to do some research on casteneda, and have thus read many writings suggesting that he is a bit of a hoax. perhaps i should have just left good enough alone, but now i'm wondering about his writings...obviously there is some ring of truth and experience to the writing, but well, i don't know...perhaps the story line itself is a bit contrived...
    what do you think?
check out 'the way of the peaceful warrior'
it's interesting in that celestine prophecy kinda way...a bit contrived but mentions some good points.

I've never heard any good evidence to suggest that Carlos made any of that stuff up. The most powerfull affirmation of the truth of his works is that the stuff he talks about really works.
