Oh but what about Animal Farm... If you take away the guns people will fight with sticks. It's in our nature to fight, we always have done. And other forms of bullshit.... I agree with you, but the fact is people are too fucking stupid to realise this. There should, in principle, be enough food and shelter to go round AND we don't all have to work 9-5, 5 days a week to organise the world. Everyone goes on about how religion is the cause of all our problems, in fact it is the lack of religion, or spirituality that is the cause of all our problems.
Agreed. No one is born wanting to take over the world. Most people are decent people with a conscience. It's when our conscience is repressed that causes a lot of suffering. There are many ways that people have in repressing the conscience of the masses (Military training for one). Fortunately, we are beginning to take notice. Once we recognize it then we can learn to avoid it.
what is the conscience of the mass? a collective of individual consciences or a distinct thing on it's own?
Hmm I've been thinking that their could be a collective conscience, but at the moment what I meant was individual consciences. Like the case of military training to block people's natural response of being apprehensive in shooting someone. So their conscience of "omg, I can't kill this person" is being blocked by reactionary training... just as an example of individual conscience being repressed. Personally, I think that our conscience is a manifestation of our relationship with God. Don't follow conscience then problems will just happen. So I think that it is a distinct thing on its own, but i'm not 100%
The psychology of collective consciousness was explored by Carl Jung, one of Sigmund Freuds contemporaries, though they didn't really agree very much I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytical_psychology
The repression of individual conscience leads to harm. A sole consideration of the conscience of another may also lead to harm.
