Like I've said before, I can feel proud to live in state like Michigan. We've always been on the cutting edge of social progress and social movements. (But our politics still tend to be kind of conservative, dominated by Republicans. And like most Republicans today, they tend to get a little nutty sometimes too. Both of which I don't like.) But we were the first place in the English speaking world to outlaw the death penalty. We never had it as a state. And it was made permanent in our present constitution of 1963. We've also never had things like laws against interracial marriage. (I just read on Google that a law against interracial marriage was passed in 1838. But then quickly repealed that same year. Same difference.) The point is, some states have histories of intolerance and injustice. And sometimes being on the wrong side of history, like in the Civil War. But Michigan has never had any of that.
