    Yes I would.

I've been a vegetarian for 25 years, but rules about life are meaningless without life itself.

Yeah right, like that's ever going to happen.
So I don't know or care. It'd probably make me ill and then I'd starve anyway.

i get tired of questions like these... they are entirely speculative, there's no way this situation could ever actually arise, and it takes away from the real reason i am vegan.

    Yes I would.

If you're starving, truely starving, you will eat ANYTHING to stay alive.

The animal in you will surface, ethics and morals will fly right out the window.

    A couple of examples:

When South America was being invaded by the Spainards several hundred years ago, they were very cruel to the indians. They were often tied up, tortured, and left to die.

I've read accounts where these poor souls would eat the maggots out of their wounds in an attempt to live. How's that for hard core?

Back in the day before embalming became standard procedure, people would sometimes get buried alive. They would lapse into a death-like coma and wake up after they had been buried. Some of these people had eaten off parts of their fingers.

Starvation is a miserable way to die. There are close to a billion people out there in the world who live on the brink of this every single day.

Think about that when you enjoy your next meal.

Would you be against eating meat if I hunted it in the most humane way possible to where the animal would not suffer any whatsoever, and in result it keeps animals from overpopulating. Would that instace be fine with most of you, since it seems like most vegetarians are just concerned with the way the animals are treated.

I am okay with that because humans eat meat naturally and you are not torturing it. I will say no thanks if you offer me some though. =P

look, I don't care (or care to know) what you eat.
Vegetarians do NOT eat flesh. Period.

personally if i ever do go back to eating meat, it would probably be in a situation like that.... where the meat was for the need of food, not just the want of the meat.

I originally became a vegetarian for spiritual reasons. This has not changed.

It goes beyond not causing the animals pain. Eating flesh foods lower one's spiritual vibrations. In consuming animals, you also take on the animal qualities which as humans, we try so hard to rise above.

The idea is to make yourself as spiritually aerodynamic as possible. Flesh foods produce a dragging effect.

You're not going to go to hell for eating meat. But you're not helping yourself either.

Only if it was totally vital for your survival, and didn't have access to the necessary supplies of vegetarian food (i.e. you were an inuit or something). There's no way an animal wouldn't suffer if they were hunted, as they feel pain and fear, so that's a moot point.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but...

If factory farming didn't exist, and there were only small farms operating in every neighborhood in the world, and cruelty, sanitation, chemicals were no longer an issue, would you go back to eating meat?

I just spent a month as a vegan working at the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY. I was completely immersed in the lifestyle, learned why this group is vegan and about all the cruel farm practices that exist. I even visited a stockyard and watched a veal auction (which traumatized me by the way). As a result, I've given up milk... not so much given it up as it tastes gross to me, now, which might be a combination of not really understanding what the point of drinking milk is anymore... plus I hate the idea of veal and the dairy industry is pretty much responisble for veal production...
ANYWAY, I'm not a vegan, now (I don't really consider myself to have been a vegan then. as it's a lifestyle choice and this really wasn't something I chose for myself- it was required to live on-site), nor am I a vegetarian. I just don't drink milk.
The "meat is murder" argument doesn't do it for me. Call me a horrible person, but I think vegans get b-12 defficiencies for a reason and we evolved to eat meat- we were meant to, in my eyes. You may disagree with me if you wish, but I can't change that, just like I won't change my beliefs to suit others.
That said, I do believe we should be treating our animals more humanely up until we eat them. The shit that goes on behind closed doors is absolutely horrible. However, I'm not going to run out and join the ALF in my black mask and ninja suit to invade laboratories and set free lab rats that will only starve to death and/or spread disease in the wild. Stuff like that just seems contradictory and anyway, if we get caught and put in prison, we can't very well help the animals that way either...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, this was kind of a mind-rape for me, and I'm still sorting things out. I'm just curious as to how many people would be okay with eating meat if it was treated with respect for giving up its life to sustain us. I realize there are conflicting reasons for going vegan and vegetarian, and that this is only a small aspect of it, but yeah, just vote.

What the hell. This is the third time (at least, I think) in about a week that questions of this nature have been posted. Please look at the responses on the other threads. Everyone has their own personal limits and comfort levels, it's a personal thing.

A LOT of us, whether interested also in animal rights or not, are veg*an for health reasons above all else. Most of those health reasons don't go away, even on a "humane" organic farm.

But, come on. This is a topic that's been discussed a million times before up here, it's starting to seem like half the active threads on this "Vegetarian" forum are just manipulative posts by omnis designed to test the resolve, commitment, or morals of veg*ans.

If you've really done this, I don't see how you can not have the facts about veg*anism. Once you have those facts it's entirely a personal choice. If you want to justify yourself by just saying the cosmos designed us to eat meat, go ahead. But please stop asking these questions. As someone said on one of those other threads - it trivializes the real reasons for this lifestyle and gets us all caught up in pointless debate about something that is unlikely to happen.
