With all of us teenager blasting our mp3's on full blast as often as we do, I wonder how many of us are gonna have serious hearing problems as we get older.

Do you guys think we will find a way to cure deafness?
I heard they are working on a way of curing it with stem cells.

Mp3 files are worse because of data compression. The resulting distortion does more damage at a given decibel level than a pure, uncompressed sound. If you want to crank it up, get a portable CD player, and the best headphones you can afford.

What type of headphones would you recommend?
And whats the maximum amount decibels you can listen to that isn't too damaging? My mp3 player says I shouldn't turn it up past 20 decibels (Yet it can go up to 30).

hmmm, perhaps so but blasting something loud into your ear is blasting something loud into your ear. Loud is not a new concept.

I would not bet on it,at least not for a very long time.--When I was a teenager the Sony walkman started to get popular.--But mp3 players are definitely bad news for hearing, alot worse than a walkman.People should either limit their use or turn the volume down low.--And hey with all the kids using computers nowadays, vision and other problems when they get older are also something to consider. The wonders of modern technology,--aint so wonderful.

Anything small enough to fit into your ear is going to seriously distort low frequencies and scatter white noise all the way up the audio spectrum. I have an old Sony pair that I really like. As long as you stick with a reputable name brand, you can just try some out and look for a crisp, clean sound, especially on the bass end.

I don't know what they are measuring, but it surely isn't standard sound level decibels. 30 dB is extremely quiet. You can't rock out at that level.

OSHA has determined that 8 hours of exposure at 90 dB or higher will result in long-term damage for most people. I doubt if you have many 8-hour listening sessions, so you can safely go up to 100 dB for an hour or two, especially with a clean source.

I have a cheap dB meter from Radio Shack, but I never have figured out how to use it directly with headphones. I just found the 100 dB level on my car stereo, then switched to headphones and adjusted them to sound the same, with the same song. That told me where the volume knob needed to be on the portable player, which has a 20-point scale. Not precise, but better than a wild guess.

I agree. It has enslaved and disabled us.
"Though human ingenuity may make various inventions which, by the help of various machines answering the same end, it will never devise any inventions more beautiful, nor more simple, nor more to the purpose than Nature does; because in her inventions nothing is wanting, and nothing is superfluous, and she needs no counterpoise when she makes limbs proper for motion in the bodies of animals. But she puts into them the soul of the body, which forms them that is the soul of the mother which first constructs in the womb the form of the man and in due time awakens the soul that is to inhabit it." -Leonardo da Vinci

I read an article that said listening to headphones(didn't say at how many decibels) for 1 hour everyday of the week is equal to working 40 hours in a loud factory.

people should note that the above is a generalisation and everybody is different you can have damage at below 85db.

and the numbers are a bit off btw. its 85db and 92db for memory.

I only agree with this for the idiots who want to blast it directly in their ears and not think of the future consequences. Go at it. My sister does it with her stupid ass rap music, we try and tell her to lower it but she doesnt

I just set mine normally because oddly i have sensitive a ear drum on my right side. but I blast my stereo and my car radio :)

I must of misread it, the volume goes up to 30.

I thinkin about getting noise cancellation head phones. Then I won't have to turn it up so loud.

I was quoting the OSHA regulations. This is a complex subject because hearing damage is affected by distortion, which is hard to measure, and duration. And there are degrees of hearing damage. I have a little, but not enough to reduce my enjoyment of music.

The Bose product works well on airplanes and noisy trains. The Sony version sucks. It's rare for me to hate a Sony product, but I do in this case.
