...in the fact that there's hordes of people listening to them, but as soon as their tastes grow up, they see just how overrated and arguably untalented they were/are.
seems reasonable enough of a point for me. thier songs are catchy and i dont mind listening to them, but yes they are compared to so many bands of the era. the fact that their most played/best known songs (i would say "light my fire" and "Break on Through") are by far some of their worst songs pretty much proves this. p.s. if "light my fire" and "Break on Through" are your favorite songs, or the only Doors songs you have ever heard of, and you claim to love them/ be a huge fan.....
You said it better than me... obviously they had talent, but compared to the hordes of other rock bands that put out albums in the late 60's, they appear to be one of the first mainstream corporate bands, seeing as how there were so many bands better than them, yet they got all the publicity that they did.
So how do N'Stync's versions of "Back Door Man" and "Roadhouse Blues" go? P.S., When the music's over, turn out the light.
I sort of separate myself very clearly from Doors fans. I am a Jim Morrison fan. However, Jim Morrison was NOT meant to be a rock star. He had poor self-control and seems to me he did as much of the harmful thigns he did to himself because he was introverted and uncomfortable in large groups. Jim Morrison WAS a poet. Having said that, few writers/poets have many great works. Most of Coleridge's crap was the result of trying to please ladies who liked to read nice little poems about flowers while paying for his opium habit. The Ancient Mariner is still a good poem. The Ghost Song is a good song, lyrically. A Feast of Friends is still a good song. Say what you like about Twentiesh Century Fox and all of that crap though. Jim Morrison should have been a poet; if he would have done this he'd still be alive and writing amazing things.
I greatly disagree. I used to love the Doors, and I'm still proud to have my Jim Morrison poster above my bed. My tastes have changed in the last year or so, and I don't listen to the Doors as much, but I still think they're one of the greatest bands of all time. Sure, they're overrated when you get hordes of teenage girls screaming "OMG i luv the doors cuz jim morrison is so hawt!"... But I think that when you actually look at them musically, they were damn talented.
i quite like the doors, maybe i will grow out of it, maybe not i don't think you can generalise about something like that, music speaks to the individual. you can say that the doors weren't all that great musicians, but they were definitely great advocates for the social movements of the time, very rock n' roll maybe thats why people like them
Some Doors fans can be irritating (the ones that are always talking about how hot Jim Morrison is and turned the Doors into that big trend)
I have to say that I can't even imagine comparing The Doors to N'Sync! the Doors may have lacked in some areas, but it was the fame and publicity that brought that on. It was too much for Jim, who was simply too crazy/genius to be put in the spotlight and given everything he dreamed of. The early years, before things were tainted, were great. I have a recording of this really old show, and it's better than anything they studio recorded later. Where as N'Sync was CREATED to be in the spotlight. None of them were artists. They weren't very deep. They were taught how to act and what to say. There's a HUGE difference!
I disagree, I've been listening to The Doors since I was in diapers. Many people simply don't listen to enough of their music to judge them fairly. Listen to other songs rather than the ones you hear multiple times a day on the radio. Ray is awesome. "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it truly is, infinite."
Compared to other psychedelic bands of the era, such as The Beatles, Love, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Mothers of Invention, The Move, Captain Beefheart, King Crimson, and blah blah blah so many others that come to, The Doors actually cannot compare to any of those, when it comes to songwriting or instruments. They were definitely not one of the greatest bands of all-time. One of the most influential, but nowhere near great. I found better music And um... Jim wannabe... whew, I'm glad I wasnt like many other young Doors "fans" I doubt anybody will get anywhere in music if they idolize Jim. He was cool... but not much of a musician at all. LIEK OMG!! im sooooooo sry 4 talkin bad about jim... hes da kewlest! omggg!!!! lololzzzz I own all their studio albums with and without Jim, and quite a few live albums too. Trust me, I've heard most all of what's been recorded
well, in my opinion our generation sucks ass so a shitty band like Green Day fits the bill quite nicely. Not that Green Day is the worst, but you get what I'm saying. It makes sense that a band that produces music about being loud, troublemaking, selfish, overindulgent brats infulences our generation.
What you just said completely contradicts what you said earlier... "I think being an influential band is just as important as musical talent." haha wha? I don't think being influential is nearly the same as being a great band. There's many, many, many bands that were far better than The Doors, that I've never seen be an influence for any musician... The Pretty Things, The Move, Moby Grape... all were better than The Doors, but far less influential. To be influential is to be popular.... just look at Madonna. How many people were idolizing her thoughout the '80s? Are you saying she's talented?
