Right, been kinda thinking of doing this thread for a while...and this seems a good time, based on what's in the "let's talk about..." thread. I love reading. I've got lots of books and I want lots more! What about you lot? What are you reading at the moment? Who are your favourite authors? Which books could you read over and over? etc
i have been reading Offbeat Australia, twas a pressie from my folks when i get around to it, i shall start reading the Chronicles Of Narnia, one by one =] i quite like the Frost books (as in inspector frost) but i wouldnt actually say i read that much =[
Books that I read over & over & over.... The Fifth Sacred Thing The Mists of Avalon The Outsiders Wilderness Mother And my bios on Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Marilyn Monroe Currently reading: herbalism text books Rob Zombie's El Superbeasto comicbook Clara & Me by Deanna Kawataski
bcmama - Mists of Avalon has been my favourite book since reading it ten years ago!!! I used to read anything and everything... Loved reading. But then I had kiddos... Now I never read. All spare time is spent working online, so reading is a favourite pass time of mine that I have had to give up for the time being.
all of tom robbins books are amazing then if you ever find a copy of the most twisted book ever written..barefoot in the head i highly recomend it..but it takes a special kinda patience to read that 1 also..yeates a vission..havent read it in years but..still oh but barefoot in the head if ya find it..ya dont really read it as much as absorb it..cause if u try to really read it it nmakes no sence at all but if u just kinda absorb it it makes total sence subconceisly possibly the most briliantly written book ever since its mostly written in a kinda language that doesnt exist outside of total dementuia or severe psychodelic induced psychosis
I'm curious about The Mists of Avalon, but I want to read my nice big edition of Le Morte D'Arthur first...which I'm quite excited about; the language looks amazing and funny at the same time. That reminds me...I've got the bilingual edition of Seamus Heaney's Beowulf sitting on my shelf looking very tempting too. I got about a billion books for xmas...seriously loads, it's gonna take forever to get through them, but I like all the worlds sitting on my shelves waiting for me Currently reading Revolutionary Road.
Amy-stop what you are doing, put on your coat and go get the Mists of Avalon right now. It is one of the most inpirational books I have ever read and I have dreams about it sometimes. While you're out, get a copy of The Fifth Sacred Thing too. It's my all time favourite book that I have ever read. I wish I could live in the story...
Lol...well I'd like to but I really should not buy any more books for a while! Don't worry, it's on my list and I'll get to it
Im a scifi whore tbh. I've got about 2 dozen asimov books and at least a dozen clarke although I have fallen slightly out of love with both of them tbh, esp clarke. As for favorite books then Dune, The revelation space trillogy (Alastair Reynolds) and anything else that approaches hard sci fi. As for the other lesser genres I love popular science / engineering books, specifically "one good turn" about the history of the screw was very good, how to dunk a doughnut and A short history of nearly everything by bill bryson. I've enjoyed some of bryson's other work like the lost continent, but some of his other stuff like the mother tongue and notes from a small island I can't be bothered with. I should probably try notes from a small island again because it took me 3 goes to get through dune messiah, and now it's one of my favs. I'm sorry its not all modern literary classics, mercedes lackey and lovecraft, but deep down inside I'm just a boring person, just pretend I said fear and loathing and 1984 and think me better for it.
bcmama is the fifth sacred thing about arthurian times as well? The Mists of Avalon was my first experience with pagans and everything... It was the first book that truly spoke to me. I knew that if there were people in this world writing these wonderful stories, that there must be people as passionate about it as I am. Ironically, I picked the book up in Amsterdam of all places... fate? pypes - I dig Asimov as well. I forget the title, but I loved the book about the world that had many suns... and that complete terror was a "roller coaster ride" in the dark. That was a wonderful book.
I have a good collection of historic novels and books on local history. I love reading stories about the pioneers that settled in Canada, and the natives that were already here. I have a dark secret stash of true crime books....don't know why I feel compelled to read some of them, but I do... I also have a big collection of homesteading how-to books and lots of reference books on local birds, trees, flowers, herbs, etc.
lol ..your apologizing after i went and mentioned one of the most obscure unheard of books ever? ive only been able to find 2 other people who have ever read barefoot in the head started rereading it a couple years ago when a freind stumbled on a copy in a used book store, but id only gotten lil over a chapter into it when the whole book just fell apart in my hands and i probly lost a few dozen pages.. hmm actualy now i sorta wish id kept it though, just to see if it made as much sence if u read the pages in random orders
I don't believe I spelt asimov with a Z, what the fuck was I thinking. My nerd cred has fallen through the floor!.
No, it takes place in a future where the world that we know has ended. A beautiful, utopia has been created by a community of people. It shows us what life could be like if we all could truly respect & understand each other's beliefs. It does have alot of pagan ceremonies & references, which I found very interesting. It also describes how they were self-suffecient in their food, energy, etc as a community and every job was paid equally for the time spent at it, even housewives & mothers. Of course, there's conflict with the military, etc, etc. but I don't want to ruin the story for you.
Wow I read much different things. My favorite author is Dean Koontz but I will read pretty much anything anyone recommends. What is Mist of Avalons about? The last "book" I read was a graphic novel by Neil Gaimen. I was thinking of reading American Psycho next. May look into that barefoot in the head.
I read dean koontz winter moon as a teenager because my mate insisted (I've still got his copy) scared the fuck out of me.
I love me some Dean Koontz and Stephen King at times, and Catherine Cookson is also another favourite author of mine. Mists of Avalon is a novel about the King Arthur/Camelot tale, told from a very female and pagan perspective. IMO it is the best version ever written, and I have read quite a few versions over the years.
