I just watched this today, for perhaps the 3rd time ever... This movie is really awesome. I haven't seen the prequel, The Hustler, but this movie is great in itself. I love the filmography and the character development... I just had to point out how wonderful I thought it was. I think Martin Scorcese really deserved that Oscar. Has anybody seen The Hustler? I'm planning on renting it soon...
Actually, Scorsese wasn't even nominated that year for Color Of Money (it came out 1986.) Newman, however, was awared Best Actor (probably because he was robbed multiple times in the past and the Acadamy wanted to make up for their mistakes; this happens all the time.) Anyhow, I agree this is a great film. Practically no one films pictures like Scorsese. The way his camera is always moving. How he (sometimes) takes time for the actors to breathe. And your question about The Hustler. I have seen it and I wasn't too crazy about it. My film mentor is trying to get me to see it again, thinking I might like it the second time. I probably will. So, this is an example of the sequel being better than the original (in my opinion, many would argue otherwise.) But, hey, it wouldn't hurt to see the original in your spare time. It isn't that bad; just not any better than Scorsese's picture.)
