Ok, here goes ... I just got finished watching the movie "The Beach" and loved it ... it totally inspired me! It was like my dream world. A commune on an island beach in Thailand ... dose it get any better? So my question to all of you was ... Do you think it would be possible to have a self sustained community on a deserted island? The only time we would go to mainland would be to trade goods. If you do think its possible ... would you be willing to try it? If we can get enough people and enough money together, we could find an island in Thialand ( that totally rymed! ) ..... and make this a reality. I'm not asking us all to pull together now ... i've seen enough of those posts before .... im asking for your input ... and if it were somehow possible, would you consider doing it?
Awww Come on people ... nobody replied yet .... whats the big idea?!?! lol Seriously though ... do you just think its a bad idea ... or have no interest at all in it? anyone ... give me anything here!
I agree I think it would be a great idea and I would be in if you ever decided to make a go of it. I think the lack of a response is not due to the idea but to the fact that most of us that have been posting on this forum for awhile and see alot of posts about getting something going, but I have yet to talk to someone who is willing to really take some action. Not that you are not serious about this, but if you are really thinking about this idea then post about what you are thinking. What kind of community would you want it to be? Any ideas about how the community would survive? What kind of decision making structure do you like? How would community resources be distruibuted? Forming a community is a huge commitment and people are much more interested in an idea if you give them more of an idea of what you are looking for in a community. I would be interested in hearing more about it. Pragmatic Idealist idealist@earthling.com
I saw the movie "The Beach" too and agree that it was a cool idea, but the capital needed just to get to Thailand is beyond a lot of people on these forums. We're struggeling getting the money together for our community because of all of the unseen expenses. The members that have come here have had access to a couple thousand dollars, but that goes pretty quickly when buying food and supplies for a whole tribe (we've found out). Thailand is an awful long way to go for a communal living situation...have you thought of islands closer to home. Possibly Costa Rica...You can drive to Costa Rica and beach front property can't actually be "owned" there. Small islands aren't inhabited and the local government is more stable than that of Thailand. Anyway...Good Luck! Peace and Love
Not once in the movie did they show anyone working, firewood, fishing, cooking washing clothes, making furniture, hell, making tools gathering fruit ...It is hard physical work ,yet everyone posting on the subject of communes or living out of society is againts hard work or has ever even had a job nor a skill to contribute to a society. When they send people to town to get goods ,everyone seemed to have money,in the movie ,where did that come from? If you think you can sell hand made goods in a third world country and compete with the locals and take food out of their mouths, think again. Those people would give anything to have a chance to make it here and would succeed. Your already in a commune, you were born in one, look around, everybody is contributing, are you?
It shows peopel working, it shows people gathering firewood, and it certainly shows fishing....shows washing clothes, shows plenty of furniture being made.....loads of fruit gathering.... those are ym favourite partds where it shows you how they survive and work... i thik its possible to do this...just not in Thailand, its too far away dude
its possible anywhere dude .. have you been o Thailand? .. why is it too far away? it takes less time getting there than i does to drive three times round the m25. and once you are there its not too far away then is it
Personally I would suggest start small and experiment. Find a small island near where you and a few friends live and just camp for different periods of time. We got a man-made lake near here that has little islands all over it and they are owned by the electric company who just leaves them for public use. You can boat over to them and camp with no problems. Then you can start figuring out how to generate a little cash and slowly disengage from the system. One last thought, choose a place where you know the seasons. A rainy season from May to September could really put a damper on things, not to mention mudslides, drought, typhoons, etc.
I saw the movie in theaters. I loved it and wished I could start one. I think its a great idea, and if anyone ever tried to get one started I'd definetally try to help out. I understand it would be alot of work, but I grew up working on my gran's farm, and fishing with my step-dad so it's not like I'm not use to it. Although, I don't know if Thailand is the greatest of places. Well anyway If you do start one contact me. Oleanader@msn.com
Thats an awsome idea man! Who knows maybe someday it`s gonna be possible to do it haha. Imagine that big field with weed and the pretty nature....i wanna watch this movie again!

Yeah I was looking for that movie cuz I wanted to rent it again but our store didnt have it ... my sisters talking about buying it on ebay..
and this is based on your experience is it? ... yiou just trot this kind of comment out of your mouth and expect it to be taken seriously .. riiight in society as we know it ... ie the one the majority of us here were born into there are poeple who are lazy scrounging freeloaders with no vison further then the end of the present day .. full of people like those you describe .. just as in communes or squats etc ... Luckily there are many more who do things, aren´t lazy and think past the end of the day to the next onto the next. what is your experience of life outside or on the edge of society, what is your experience of living communally which justifies these comments? succeed????????????? .. in a capitalist sense or what? ... define sucess from your point of view for us all to see and then we can understand you better. production of more shit .. more plastice crap .. more designer handbags .. you don´t have to be in production to earn a living .. and third world? .. thats from your point of view ... the issue is much much more complex than that .. i suggest you read these books .. seeing green ... and Ishmael, the latter written by daniel quinn and the former i forget but you will find it on the net. these books will give you a real perspective on the issues as they are .. not viewpoints influenced by greed, manipulation or propanganda .. these people would give anything to make it here and would succeed! ... how very mis-informed, naive and inchoate. and this one .. i really don´t have to say anything about this no? ... jesus christ ... why are you here in the forums with this kind of comment? maybe for enlightment .. well read the books and come back and we will see what your opinion is the .. if you are looking for any commune i will point you in the right direction and you can go see for yourself how life is .. i lived for over a year in a protest camp in the trees .. and the community there was unlike anything i have seen before ... adios
but i do think the movie is shit .. it isnt an autonomous community .. and the attitudes that they display to one another .. come on people ... how can you say this shit is good .. they leave a guy in a tent to die .. the LEADER .. is bombastic and a manipulator ..
well I kinda think it showed the good and the bad and the obvious in communal life especially so detatched and hidden. I mean yeah the leader was a manipulative lady...but trust me its not hard for that to happen in any sort of leadership....Im not saying it happens all the time but it does happen and easily. the punishment suited the crime I thought, when he was exciled and had to watch those other cats... but thats exactly what would happen the guy went nuts... tragidy can happen and that is definatley a risk...see what happened to the brother after bieng bit by a shark... those people didnt want to deal with suffereing...idealisim in communal lifestyles are definatley a concern. people think its going to be dasies....but a lot of the time its a real struggle, I mean its fine for a week, maybe a month, but then you hit a winter and things go wrong..... this sort of life is well worth it but anyone who thinks its easy is out to lunch
I watched the Beach and didn't like it at all - it just seems to highlight the problems with communes and the social / leadership structure. Found it all a bit juvenile to be honest. Didn't give me any inspiration at all, I wasn't even interested in communal living at the time, and not for a few years after either.
Wow ... I started this thread AGES ago ... somehow it got pulled back to the front. Yeah my whole view on the movie has changed since then. I learned alot more about self sustained communities and such ... well it is a really bad example, like some of you had said. just thought I'de throw that in there.
Hi everybody, I started a self-sufficient life few years ago and I was succesfull.I am 50y. old, living in the city almost all my life. With a little garden, fishing and deep knowledge about the nature you will have a good life.I know a lot now about building, solar cooking, heating, etc.and I can support myself in any conditions. Although I was living without costs,I gave up,not finding people in the area interested in this kind of life,so I am struggling now to find them and restart.
Pls.contact if you are interested,I am in Eastern Europe,my site is www.freewebs.com/energiesolara; Thanks
