i can't imagine anyone who'd really be interested in eternal life, anyway.
one of your previous posts described an eternal life as a 'band of iron' that would inevitably lead to insanity.
fruitful pursuit... wouldn't that require a time limit.... a real pursuit is one where there's only so much time to complete the task.
i'd never choose eternal life, at least not here.

what i meant was that eternal life in this reality, with this body, mind, etc, is in a reality where it seems obvious that one is never able to understand reality... like one cannot ever look in at oneself. there is a chance that in death, one may discover a new reality, and that must be worth more than a chance at eternal investigation of a single point of view.
eternal life *here* is binding to a single reality; perhaps i would want eternal life in some other way, where i would be capable of turning in and seeing myself, and where knowledge was something i already had.

haha, you're totally right... i don't know what i was thinking in saying that i can't imagine anyone who would want eternal life. i suppose i meant, eternal life here, starting now. the eternal life i can imagine is like the christian heaven, then; complete access to truth.

as far as eternal life here and now goes, i found this to be a good comment:

We all live in what many would call a modern world...
Occam however believes we are still savages with a veneer of reason applied over a core of ego and instinct.
Our great cities are nothing but primative concrete huts.
We violate the atmosphere with dinky litle 'cars' that run on the remains of dead plantlife.
1/3 of the world starves and the richest 5% own nearly half the planet.
[According o scribbles on bits of squashed tree, sorry newspapers]
We kill and maim eathother with gay abandon and even popularise mass murder.
Reducing sentient life, the most valuable thing that exists.. To a monetary
value that is variable according to local custom.

Is this the 'bad night' Nietzsche spoke of?
Were his dreams of the lunacy we propse as a modern and civilised world?
Occam can empathise well if they were..For his nightmares are also
made of the horror humans can create in reality.

But will we always be like this?

Occam takes a VERY distant viepoint when he thinks of our race.
Futureward and spaceward.

Imagine a HUGE planet of ocean...Mighty seas and unknown dangers.
Dotted across these titanic waters are billions of tiny islands.
All just a few hundred meters across.
Some of the islands have people living on them.
On one such island. Twins, brother and sister have now grown enough to build a crude shack.

I think its cuz they are vain and have a exaggerated self image. Their ego and their vanity dictate that they are too important to die, and that it would be a terrible tragedy were it to happen. If people looked at their life as being just the same as the 50 000 + children who die every day for want of basic medical care or food, they wouldn't see their own demise as that big a deal. So I'm gonna die, whoop tee doo, so what else is new?
