Thats occam. Why.? Because he believes. Based on all the humans he has met. That eternal life would be a total waste for many. In fact.. a curse. Those we all know that get bored with reality in the short time mortality gives us...The ones we say..'how can you be bored'? [to] Are going to spend eternity in fruitfull persuit? In self growth. In seeking understanding? In harmony with others and loving family? [no. apparently most will spend eternity basking in the glory of god or being tortured fore-ever... man ,,what a crock of shit] Yeh right. Occam PS.. And occam has A1 evidence of this. Irrefutable it's called..comercial TV PPS. And the answer is? Education. [thus you see occams discust and loathing for our current education system]
i can't imagine anyone who'd really be interested in eternal life, anyway. one of your previous posts described an eternal life as a 'band of iron' that would inevitably lead to insanity. fruitful pursuit... wouldn't that require a time limit.... a real pursuit is one where there's only so much time to complete the task. i'd never choose eternal life, at least not here.
NightMareHippyGirl Occam knows thousands that would...The entire population of all the religious forums..for one. The only fruitfull persuit occam knows of. Is the gaining of understanding. the bannishment of ignorance. And a nice warm cuddle with a partner he loves.... Occam is a rationalist..yet freely admits humanity is more than a machine intelligence of cause and effect. Of pure rational morality which a machine may have. Love is a variable that bewilders the rational. Yet it exists....thank their god...hehehehe The greatest folly occam knows of. Is the acceptance of anothers truth. When one cannot show himself any less perceptive than the 'another' And does not question the 'truth' this 'another' poses. Religion is based on it...it's called being lazy. [mentally] Religion promotes the idea...emphatically. That it cannot be questioned in it understanding. And THAT is why occam detests religion. It exists as an organisation that lives oppon the hopes of others. It could not be without humanities desire to understand. To have meaning. And it EXPLOITS THIS Occam
So its´all a matter of how much you can avoid becoming a victim of religion, the education system, t.v., the dominant paradigm, before you get a proper understanding of the world and all those things.
Mati. What is? Occam simply asks that free thought. imagination and specuation come together to 'see' where we may be going. Yet Some Shithead says occam is going to hell. and occam is sick and tired of it... He will put up with NO MORE GENERALISED THREATS FROM MORONS Occam wants some fool to come to him as tell him why he will burn in hell. If they cannot..then let them never darken his life again with their petty beliefs. Occam
*puts on his jester's cap* =P 1) You [sic] Occam condemns organized religion 2) Occam tells people to have faith in themselves, not in the Almighty God, Yahweh. 3) Occam is a heathen, not a Catholic. 4) Occam has not confessed his sins. 5) Occam has not recognized Jesus Christ as his saviour. *takes it off* =D
Hikky Bugger..Occam was pretty out of it last night..and got slightly angry Please , all, ignor this thread ..The start post is crap.... Occam
eternal life but not here.... what i meant was that eternal life in this reality, with this body, mind, etc, is in a reality where it seems obvious that one is never able to understand reality... like one cannot ever look in at oneself. there is a chance that in death, one may discover a new reality, and that must be worth more than a chance at eternal investigation of a single point of view. eternal life *here* is binding to a single reality; perhaps i would want eternal life in some other way, where i would be capable of turning in and seeing myself, and where knowledge was something i already had. haha, you're totally right... i don't know what i was thinking in saying that i can't imagine anyone who would want eternal life. i suppose i meant, eternal life here, starting now. the eternal life i can imagine is like the christian heaven, then; complete access to truth. as far as eternal life here and now goes, i found this to be a good comment: "the thought of suicide is a powerful solace- by means of it, one gets through many a bad night" nietzsche
Only those who fear death require eternal life. Only those who trust not require assurance. Only those who will not, cannot. Only those who die live.
I wouldn't mind eternal life...If there is a higher being then there is something to learn . If you let me spend etrinty with my wife then i wouldn't mind either . *shurgs* I guess it depends on how you look at it.
HippyGirl This is also a very important part of math and the theories of understanding..[epistemology] We can never truley understand reality because we are part of it. We cannot get outside it. We can only obeserve as part of the thing we observe. Occams proposition was to make our physicallities in this reality. Functionally immortal, barring accident. And he believes we are no more than a century from being able to do it. Agree..Sorry if occam implied that a spiritual soul our one able to exist free of our minds in this reality. Was not possible... This is not so..Such is quite possible... But should occam turn down the option of near physical indestructabillity in this reality. On the possibillity that his consciousness may go to a different one at death? Is that not called 'burning your bridges before you cross them?' One of the prime persuits of humanity that occam could imagine once we each have a future that allows 10,000 years just reading up on a topic. and 50,000 years actually researching.. IS OTHER REALITIES and how to access them. Occam understands. and tentatively counters with a warning about there NOT being a continuation of self after death in this reality. "The graves a fine and restfull place. But none i fear, do there embrace" Opinion We all live in what many would call a modern world... Occam however believes we are still savages with a veneer of reason applied over a core of ego and instinct. Our great cities are nothing but primative concrete huts. We violate the atmosphere with dinky litle 'cars' that run on the remains of dead plantlife. 1/3 of the world starves and the richest 5% own nearly half the planet. [According o scribbles on bits of squashed tree, sorry newspapers] We kill and maim eathother with gay abandon and even popularise mass murder. Reducing sentient life, the most valuable thing that exists.. To a monetary value that is variable according to local custom. Is this the 'bad night' Nietzsche spoke of? Were his dreams of the lunacy we propse as a modern and civilised world? Occam can empathise well if they were..For his nightmares are also made of the horror humans can create in reality. But will we always be like this? Occam takes a VERY distant viepoint when he thinks of our race. Futureward and spaceward. Imagine a HUGE planet of ocean...Mighty seas and unknown dangers. Dotted across these titanic waters are billions of tiny islands. All just a few hundred meters across. Some of the islands have people living on them. On one such island. Twins, brother and sister have now grown enough to build a crude shack. Have learnt to make flint and shape wood to their whim. [sort of] And looking to the horizon..seeing the faint flash of green that they think may be another island. "Wonder if we could make a boat" That .IS HUMANITY. We are on the first rung of a ladder that seems to have no top. Does not this mean that occam is but a perishable ape. A hoary bag of flesh with a big ego and a new toy called reason. Just climbing into the light that that human reason has made in the great sea of unknowing? Of course it does...so what. What did the oracle say.? Know thyself. Occam
I think some are. I think most people are afraid of something else, though: the idea that, when you die, if there is no afterlife, you completely cease to exist, and all of life was for naught. Not that it's a correct or stable viewpoint, but ...
occam, thanks very much for an awesome reply... i printed it out & shoved it in a book to read at the park. ...is that creepy?; i hope your sagely wisdom isn't copyrighted. it's very nice to have people interested enough to supply such thorough responses in here. peace, sophia ps. do you by any chance live in oz? i noticed you say 'ta' for thank you back in one of your posts..... a very aussie thing, it seems.
HippyGirl Your welcome. It brings happyness to know you enjoyed it. Occam only asks that he be told to shutup when he babbles on. This one truely believes that women are correct when they say men talk too much. "sagely wisdom?" HoHo.. One of occams goals is to promote the idea that wisdom can be had by anyone. Understanding is the processing of information to allow an accurate idea of how and what, reality is. Wisdom. Is simply the same thing, putting the jigsawbits of understanding together so as to make the 'wisest' decision about an action or plan. Copyright? Plaster the thing on the sky if you wish May you be happy. Occam PS..Yes..Occam lives in NSW.OZ.
WooHoo..The old username still works Like the newone better though. RazorOfOccam was a bit wanky Occam

Their ego and their vanity dictate that they are too important to die, and that it would be a terrible tragedy were it to happen. If people looked at their life as being just the same as the 50 000 + children who die every day for want of basic medical care or food, they wouldn't see their own demise as that big a deal. So I'm gonna die, whoop tee doo, so what else is new?
Blackguard.. Yes ..occam has met many like that.. Think it may also be a near total lack of a conceptual horizon. The closer the horizon..the larger one feels. A big ego helps as well. [and the harder it falls] Occam
